Over 25 Million Modern Warfare 2 Players, DLC Details Coming

We here at Game Informer might be a little obsessed with Bad Company 2 right now, but a recent tweet from Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling serves as a definitive reminder of just how massively popular Modern Warfare 2 is.

Bowling’s tweet revealed that the game has just passed 25 million unique online players since launch, counting players on all three platforms. Bowling also names Xbox 360 as the platform with the most players, and mentions that details on the upcoming DLC will be revealed this week as well.

The news may be bittersweet for fans of the series after last week’s hoopla involving the termination of studio heads, Jason West and Vince Zampella. After all, 25 million unique online players is pretty solid evidence that the duo did something right. Which leaves us with the following question: Will future sequels be as popular as Modern Warfare 2, or will loyal fans declare war on Activision for its handling of series' creators? Sound off in the comments section below.

  • It sucks that Activision decided to let the minds behind this awesome game go. But, I am very excited to see what they do next. I can only imagine the awesomeness of a non-activision modern warfare-type game. One in which they can truly do all that they want to do and not be held back by vicious deadlines.

  • I did like IW's games and i'll be sad to see them go but that doesn't mean that other studios can't be creative in their work. Honestly i don't care who develops a game as long as i enjoy playing it. I'm here for entertainment not for company loyalty. If it's a solid game than i'm up for it.

  • Jose = Bozo'd

  • i hate activision.

the reason they fired jason and vince is because they owned the right to modern warfare and they weren't going to make a modern warfare 3,if  activision fired jason and vince then activision gets a sequel to there precious modern warfare 2,therefore making them even more money.

    i hate activision.

  • @Jose: Let it be known that your comment was useless beyond all reason. Especially considering that you said it twice.

Anyway, if the fan base is loyal to "Call of Duty" then the series will live on as usual. But if the name is tied to the creators of the series then this might be the end of Modern Warfare for us all.

  • Lies NPD showed that less than 50% of people who play games play online and this number would need more than 96% of everyone that bought Modern Warfare 2 to play online and the numbers for that just don't add up Nice try Activision.

  • Doesn't mean there are 25 million people playing, it only means that many HAS played it or logged into multiplayer once. I stopped playing months ago because of all the glitches and kids bombarding every server I joined.

  • BTW IW can't make MW or CoD games as that moniker is OWNED by AV.

  • I will buy the MW founder's next game and will skip the next Activision version just on principle.

  • The highest number I ever saw playin total online ( I play every day) was 5 million and that was on day two by the end of the first week it was at peak hours less than 800k now its even less.

  • I rented it.  I didn't think it was all the great, so I didn't buy it.  They are going to count me as an online player still, aren't they?  Stupid.

  • i still can't believe that they let West and Zampella go, hopefully IW will keep making awesome games like this in the future

  • Not first, also.... 25 million? what? So that would include sharing the game on the same system, and multiple profiles that people tend to make.

  • Everyone bow down to Jose.

  • Finally some DLC I waited for sooo long! Too bad I already sold my copy of MW2, does not matter seeing as BC2 has me hooked. Anyways I might have to repurchase MW2 just for this DLC!

  • I'm excited to see how Activision will handle the Call of Duty franchise from here, and if the new studio/developer working on Call of Duty can make it better than Infinity Ward.

  • way to tell us that something is COMING...but not quite here

  • interesting I was getting worried considering how nice activision has been to IW recently RIP Jason and Vince the greatest minds in gaming you have affected us all yet your publisher treats you like s*it

  • Those numbers aren't quite as impressive when you consider that a lot of those probably played once or twice.  In any case, I gave up MW2 a long time ago because I couldn't stand the nonstop glitches, campers, and killstreaks that were all over the place.  I probably will not buy another Call of Duty game.

  • we should boycott activision to teach them a lesson..bloody idiots..
