Ubisoft Takes To The Pitch With Pure Futbol

by Matt Bertz on Mar 04, 2010 at 10:18 AM

Just in time for the World Cup, publisher Ubisoft is throwing its hat into the soccer genre with Pure Futbol, a five-on-five arcade-style footy title featuring 17 international teams comprised of current soccer stars and legendary players.

Ubisoft Vancouver is handling the development duties for the game, which will be published for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The studio is also developing the cartoonish Academy of Champions title for the Wii, which some gaming press jokingly dubbed "Harry Potter Soccer."

Filling the space left vacant by the dormant FIFA Street franchise from EA Sports, Pure Futbol emphasizes "the intense, physical, and spectacular aspects of the sport," according to the Ubisoft press release. To achieve its goal, the game employs an over-the-shoulder camera perspective to bring players closer to the action. Each international team will feature a variety of players from which to choose, or players can create a custom athlete to take through a career mode. The game supports four-player local matches, and one-on-one games online. Check out the debut trailer starring Liverpool and England phenom Steven Gerrard:

Though it's typically renowned for its action/adventure, military, and casual games, this isn't the first time Ubisoft has dabbled in the sports genre. The France-based publisher also released the poorly received arcade hoops game And 1 Street Ball, and just two years ago introduced the Shaun White Snowboarding series.

Ubisoft hasn't announced an official release date for Pure Futbol, but it plans to ship the game this May.
