Update: PSP May Soon Stand For PlayStation Phone, Sony Comments

Update: Sony has provided a comment regarding a potential new device: "We've already announced that Sony (including SCE) and Sony Ericsson have been strengthening their collaboration in the networked mobile space. However, it is not our strategy to discuss future products or business plans before we make any formal announcements. Any media report that suggest details of the product or business is based purely on speculation."

A Sony mobile phone/game system hybrid may be in the works to compete with Apple's popular handhelds.

According to reports from Japan's Nikkei business daily, Sony plans to set up a project team to develop a new device that combines its PSP and Ericsson handhelds. No other details have been released.

We have contacted Sony for comment and will update the story as soon as we receive a response.

What do you think? Does the prospect of a PlayStation Phone interest you?

  • Yeah, N-Gage all over again. Oh, and I know this is childish, but, First!

  • That would be freakin awesome. I am a Hardcore sony guy and that would be a move of genious if they did something like that

  • Big phone!

  • I would love it if it wasn't just a phone with gaming capabilities but the other way around. If it was the PSP2 and it had phone capabilities...and a second analog stick.

  • hell ya it does.

  • Ah yes, just what the world needs, yet another over-priced contract cell phone.

Sorry, I'm a pre-paid cell guy and that suits me just fine. I didn't feel the need to go gaga over the iPhone, or any Smart-phone for that matter. So a PlayStation phone wouldn't matter at all to me.

I'm not gonna say don't buy it if/when it comes out, but I do suggest to off-set the 'New Shiny!' syndrome with a bit of practicality and research.

Fun's fun, until you have to pay for it. :)

  • of course....it would be cool to have a ps console and a phone :p

  • As long as it doesn't suck like the N-Gage, this could be promising.

  • sounds interesting, but i hope that sony ruin the PSP's reputation like they did with the PSP Go. Good thing i didn't bought it. But still if they made it and the reviews get to say it's a pretty good handheld game/phone, i'll buy it.

  • I'd get a tight Sony phone.

  • no

  • People have been talking about this since it first came out, they would dominate the market place with that

  • That has to be one of the most terrible ideas I've ever heard. Sony really needs to step it up a notch, or bow out of the console wars altogether. They really kicked ass before, but everything after the PS2 has been just plain bad. I'm not talking strength of hardware at all, I'm talking about software rights, library of games, cost for hardware, etc. They disappoint me just as much as Nintendo disappoints me for releasing such crappy games. The Jonas Brothers should have absolutley no affiliation to games, ever.

  • That would be really cool as long as it came to Verizon

  • Hmm... I wonder if that was why Sony released the Go? It's arguably more sleek and phone-like. Maybe it was a sort of test to see if the public could handle the design?

Either way, I really couldn't see myself buying it. It sounds fun, but whenever I bring my PSP on the go, I always have it in a case in my backpack, not like my phone which is always in my pocket.

  • It might be interesting, as long as it doesn't require the taco style talking of the N-Gage...

  • N-Gage all over again. If it does happen it will just be a PSP GO with a phone. No thanks... I'll stick with my iPhone and Bejewled 2.

  • nah, iPhone all the way. im never getting anything else

  • At least it would have more software than the current PSP.
