Super Street Fighter IV Will Be $40, Capcom Explains Pricing

We've known for a while that Super Street Fighter IV would be retailing for less than a full-priced game, but Capcom has recently the official cost - $40. Capcom's Christian Svensson recently spoke to Gamasutra, where he elaborated on the decision.

"It's $40. We had two choices, and the economics didn't work out on one... No matter what, we were fracturing the userbase, and we had to start from scratch," Svensson said. "The other part of this is frankly we were putting in so much new content, we thought that a platinum play wasn't the right play anyway. So, going $10 above Platinum/Greatest Hits pricing was sort of a nice compromise. And we haven't announced it, but for those who have purchased and played Street Fighter IV on the system that they play this on, there will be a nifty little special set of things that those people will have the option of enjoying that others won't"

So basically, for $40 we'll be getting new stages, 10 new characters, greatly enhanced online support, and even some unannounced bonuses for those who own the original. As can be expected, there are some outspoken critics on message boards and comments that claim it's overpriced. However, it's important to keep in mind that Street Fighter II went through two reiterations on the SNES, and both were full priced (which was $60+ back in the early 90s). I personally think it's a perfectly fair price. What about you...will you fork over the $40 without argument, or do you think it's a glorified, overpriced expansion pack?

  • I think this is fair. It isn't going to be enough to get Street Fighter 4 owners to buy it again. I do think that it will attract people who passed on the original.

  • I have street fighter 4 so I don't think I will be rebuying a game forsome new things. Why didn't they do this from the beginning?

  • Come on really? dude i have the game and i am straight with the stuff i got. how come they didn't do this in the beginning? they need to think about that. Who would re-buy a game just to get more stuff? its a waist of money and time.

  • I don't care I've already bought the first iteration and I'm excited for this next one.  $40, totally worth it.

  • i never got the first one so i will probably get this one.

  • It's a good compromise

  • It's completely fair. Speaking as someone who never bought the regular version I'm really looking forward to this one.

  • sorry but im not interested in that game =/

  • Glorified over priced expansion pack.

  • Good for the people who didn't get it the first time

Bad for the people who did get it the first time, suckers :)

  • I'm buying.

  • Since I don't own the first SFIV, I think paying $20 less for its update is more than fair. I'm in!

  • $40 is a great price for a sequel worth of features. I honestly think this is a good model for fighters instead of a $60 release every year...

  • Also, that picture looks to be of the Japanese Version.

  • I love capcom i just wont eat out and buy this :)

    @Jeff Oberlander

I wouldn't necessarily say that. I own the original and I'll be getting this on day one. Wouldn't be surprised if many others feel the same way.

  • i had to sell my 360 along with this game and all my others. I recently rebought a ps3 and wanted to get this s4 agin, but opted to wait until this came out. SO for my money i'm getting the brand new version for about what it would have cost me to buy sf4 used. I will def be picking this up day one! Can't wait!

I don't think Capcom needs to justify the price tag on this one. I obviously like getting additional stuff for free in re-releases, but with so much new content on SSFIV, I think charging some extra money makes sense.

  • Not only am I gonna throw my money at at this game like it's a stripper I'ma pay for a lap dance and beg for it to meet me in the parking lot after it's shift !

  • Good on them. They're acknowledging the fact that it's not a full-fledged "brand new" game, while still offering new content for a decent price. For those that never bought the first one this is a no-brainer.
