Test Drive Rides Again

Atari and Alone in the Dark developer Eden Games are working on Test Drive Unlimited 2, and like its predecessor this game features blends online and offline racing in one unified open world.

The first Test Drive Unlimited title was well received for its ambitious mix of open world racing and the ability to dive into online races at any point. Since its release in 2006, other titles such as Burnout Paradise, have also merged on- and offline seamlessly, so we're excited to see what kinds of strides forward Eden Games has made in the past four years. In the first game you could cruise the island and take on any challenges that came your way, and if your friend was in the same area, you could challenge them to a race as they streaked by without having to pull out of the world and go to a menu.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 continues this mix of online and offline racing with team races and the sharing of customized items. Other tenets of the franchise are returning as well, such as real-world sports cars, the buying of property to house all your rides, and the customization of your car/avatar to represent your luxurious lifestyle. The game will also add new features such as a day/night cycle, weather, vehicle damage, and new locations and challenges.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but Atari has not yet announced a release date or timeframe for the game.

  • Makes sense that a horror game developer would be making a racing title.

Actually, Eden has a good racing pedigree. Even before the first Test Drive Unlimited.

  • Wasn't test drive made first? Anyways, I've been waiting a long time for some solid info on this so this is great! Some old rumors are that it will have SUVs. I personally don't care if they are included, as long as there are lots of improvements and tons of sweet rides.

  • Just read that TDU2 will take place in Ibiza. Check out the new website and you may notice the pictures in the letters are probably from Ibiza. I am extremely happy they aren't doing Hawaii again, not that I didn't like it there. A new fresh hispanic place sounds pretty cool to me.

  • Where's granturismo 5?

  • The first one had a lot of flaws but was still pretty fun for a while.  Hopefully there is more customization in the second and it wont get as tedious so quickly.

  • i hope you get to customize and upgrade your car because that is what gets all the street racing fans to buy your game.

  • I'm excited that it's official now, I've heard rumors that they were making a second but hadn't heard anything solid. I'd like to see better physics and graphics, and perhaps a better variety of challenges.

Also, another thing that bothered me was the lack of people walking around. I know that runs the risk of adding violence but they should figure out some way to make it so that I don't feel that I'm driving around after civilization died off or something.

  • Ahah, I completely forgot about the horrible physics in the first. I would also like to see the sidewalks changed. They were too high on the curb and they didn't curve. If I remember correctly, the streets throughout the whole game had lots of sharp edges. Pointy!

  • Heck yes! I loved the first game, I'm really excited about this one. The balance of classic and newer cars was really nice. I'm just hoping they add more cars this time around, and the ability to customise them a little bit more. Before you couldn't do much aside from colour and performance packages. If we could do some other slight modifications (nothing Fast and Furious-like) it would be nice. Great news!

  • yaaaaay...more racing

  • Sounds pretty interesting, maybe I'll follow this a bit more. I've never played the first Test Drive, but I'll check into this one a bit more.

  • As long as the game takes place somewhere different, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, these screens look an awful lot like Hawaii. Gimme some snowcapped European mountains!!!

  • with GT5, Blur, and Split/Second on the way, why would we need this?

  • Lets just wait and see how it turns out.

  • The picture looks like a gumbert apollo, nice. Lose the tropical locations, im sick of it. I want the alps, or the riviera. Stelvio Pass anyone. Plus increase the car list by about 50%.

  • Passed up on the original. I'll buy it online, I guess.

  • awesome ferrari

  • @f00gers

Yes, they are all racers, but they are not necessarily providing to the same audience. Two of them are niche products (Split/Second and Blur) and provide unique racing experiences that you don't see very often. Yes you can say they are similar to Burnout but that is not true. I would say that GT5 and Test Drive are competing but not in the same scale as Forza vs. Gran Turismo. If you read this article or played the first game, you would realize that although both are racing games at heart, Test Drive offers more in quantity (not sure you can beat GT quality). It is a sandbox/MOOR mix and Gran Turismo cannot say it is either one of those. If I had a PS3 to get Gran Turismo, I would get both. Sadly, I do not so I will definitely be getting TDU2.
