New Tecmo Bowl Kicking Off This Spring

Old school football fans have been screaming for this for years, and Tecmo is finally coming through. This spring Tecmo Bowl Throwback comes to XBLA and PSN, and the game is mixes in the old gameplay and look of the SNES version with some new 3D graphics.

Developed by Southend Interactive, Tecmo Bowl Throwback, contains both new 3D graphics and the ability to switch back to the classic 2D style as well. The game also features online multiplayer and online leaderboards while still retaining old school Preseason, Season, and Pro Bowl modes.

It'll be interesting to see how the game blends 2D and 3D. Are they totally separate gameplay modes? In its early press release Tecmo makes it sound like they are.

The allure of the original Tecmo Bowl for SNES was its use of NFL teams and players – something this game lacks. However, you can change the team and player names, so it'll be interesting to see if the hardcore Tecmo community which has kept abreast of all the roster changes since the game's release back in '93 switches over to Throwback.

No prices have been announced for Tecmo Bowl Throwback.

Do you love Tecmo Bowl because it's a great game, or is it just the nostalgia talking? I guess with Throwback we'll find out if people are really hunking for some old school football.

The routes may be slightly different, but the flavor is the same.

  • SNES?  Heck, the only Tecmo Bowl I remember was 8-bit.

  • This isn't that exciting.

  • Sweet!   I loved this game on nintendo.  Super Tecmo was ridiculous back in the day and the DS Tecmo was even fun.  This is going to be a fun game for a football quick fix.

  • Awesome. Besides NFL 2K5, Tecmo Super Bowl III: Final Edition is my favorite football game of all time.  Arcade style football at its best. Although it's a bummer that EA continues to hog the NFL franchise, I'm glad that the edit player option is still intact. This will be a definite purchase for me when it hits XBL.

  • Ooooo. I like the snazzy graphics. I'll bet this will be more fun than Madden 11

  • Mod

Tecmo Super Bowl ruled back in the day. That said, I'm really not that interested in this. Maybe it's the NFL licensing thing or maybe its because it is coming out in spring! I'm in the mood for baseball and playoff basketball in the spring, not football.

  • I might just get this just to listen to all of the ridiculous things my brother will say while playing this.

  • never played it before...could be cool

  • i loved that game...cant wait!

  • This might be a dumb question, but is there any way to get XBLA games by hardcopy? I don't have an internet connection at home, so obviously don't have an XBLA account, but there are some games, like this, that I think would be fun to play.

  • i didnt hear good things about the ds version

  • meh, Tecmo-Bowl is alright. Cool nostalgia i suppose.

I was just wish someone other than EA could bring us a true NFL sim. Madden '10 was the best one in awhile but i still feel somebody could top EA if given the chance. Oh well, maybe someday...

  • Wow, that looks really good.

  • It might just be the nostalgia talking, but I'm a bit excited for this.

  • How can this game not show Nintendo any love? No virtual console? c'mon!!

  • @mochrieb

    i agree.

  • This looks kinda fun, but I wish they used sprites instead of making them 3d.. or at least making them a little more stylized and cartoony.

  • This game looks awesome, and you love punching babies if you don't feel the same.

I am let down by no official licensing though. But then again, a sprite named R. Craig isn't much different than one not named that.

I'll be surprised if they don't wait and release DLC to add on the Panthers, Jaguars and Ravens to the original Tecmo Super Bowl lineup, haha.

  • Can't wait. This was the football game back in the day, I used to play it all the time.

  • I'm pretty sure it never came out on the SNES. Aside from that, I'm really not too excited about this. I'm sick of rehashes, even if they are severely updated.
