Cave Story Comes To WiiWare On March 22

The Nintendo Q1 Media Summit brings the news that this long-awaited downloadable game will finally be releasing late next month.

Cave Story originally released in 2004 as a freeware PC title in Japan, and was the work of a single designer, Daisuke Amaya, also known as Pixel. The PC indie game later received an English translation that helped to bring its clever and engrossing gameplay to the states. Developer Nicalis has been hard at work porting the game for play on WiiWare. The new version has seen a complete graphical overhaul, a remastered soundtrack, and several new gameplay features. Among them is the inclusion of multiple save files, five new play modes (including a Time Attack and Boss Rush mode), and a new playable character.

Cave Story plays as an action/exploration platformer, in the vein of games like Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Shadow Complex. 2D platforming and jumping combine with shooting and a constant search for upgrades throughout a lengthy gameplay experience. The art style is reminiscent of classic 8-bit gaming, but gorgeous hand-drawn art sets Cave Story apart. The game is also notable for its intriguing and unusual story, compete with multiple endings.

We'll post our full review of the game upon its release on March 22. Have you played the original? Will you be checking out the remake?

  • MEH!

  • FINALLY!  i never played this game on pc, but when i watched the first trailer and heard the music i couldnt get enough of this.  Been delayed too long imo, but it sucks it hits in march when i already have a stack of games i want to buy.

  • Haven't played the original but I might give it a shot.

  • I'm diggin' the retro look to this game!  Definitely gonna have to try it.

  • I LOVE the original, and I'm definitely going to purchase the new WiiWare version. Got to support good gaming!

  • And on the last day of a dying gaming economy, god granted the feeble mortals Cave Story and thus a new decade of adventure revolution took hold and saved the economy by rolling a giant katamari complete with every dull shooter game in the market

  • FINALLY! Ever week I'm continually dissapointed this game hasn't come out. I had given up on it ever coming out. Now the release date is here and I won't have to be forever frustrated.

On a side note Photo Fighter is coming to DSiWare as Photo Dojo. YES! (Can't believe GI didn't have a story on this yet. That's the big DSiWare announcement from the press conference)

  • yaaaaaaaay

  • It's nice to see all previously announced DLC has been integrated into the initial release of the game, for free. I wonder if they will still release other types of DLC, or if this was all they had planned.

  • I looked at the updated graphics, and I feel that the game has lost some of its original charm. Oh well, I'll still be able to switch to the original graphics and sounds.

  • I think I remember hearing about this game a few years ago when it first came out, it looks interesting.

  • Looks awesome! If 500 points (which is all i have) I'll definately get it. If more...sorry, but i don't want to buy another $20 card for one download game.

  • Same here. All I have is 400 points though, so I'll have to buy another $20 card to download. This looks like it will be around 800 to 1200 points.

  • Oh yeah, Finally! DEFINITELY checking this one out.

  • I love this game but I really wish it would make the jump to XBLA.  I'm not going to pull out my Wii just to play it.

  • yeah i played it the first time i wish i had a wii to play this version

  • This game looks and sounds really good and I'm looking forward to playing it; I've never heard of it before but since I am not in love with indie games this is going to be a definite buy on the WiiWare!!

  • One gut made this?!? Thats it, I'm buying it. Just gotta figure out how...

  • This game looks crazy, in a fun way. I'm disappointed that I can't try the demo now that Nintendo made the stupid move of pulling them from WiiWare, but I might pick it up with my points left over from my last purchases.

  • The original is a great game. Also the music is so Good.
