Rebellion Happy With AvP Sales, Disappointed With Some Reviews

Last week's release of Aliens vs. Predator was the talk of the internet. A few negative reviews caused quite a controversy among those who felt the game wasn’t being given a fair shake (yeah, we were one of those reviews), but that didn’t stop the game from selling – at least in Europe. The game shot to number one on the European charts, outpacing BioShock 2 and Mass Effect 2.

Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley talked with news site www.develop-online.net about how happy he was with the game’s overall sales. “We wanted Aliens vs. Predator to be a critical success as well as a commercial success, which we think we have achieved,” said Kingsley. “The reviews have been mostly good. We’ve had three totally *** reviews by some Americans, which is a bit odd. [Us again.] Some of them were inexcusably bad.”

Kingsley went on to say. “We’re also in discussions with Sega about ongoing support for AvP, and also about a sequel to the game.” While this is far from an official announcement of a sequel, it is good news for fans of the game.

It could also mean good news for British developers in general. Europe often seems to play second fiddle next to Japan and the U.S., but games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, LittleBigPlanet, and Heavenly Sword have proved there is plenty of talent on the other side of the pond. So any success from a British developer could be good for the market as a whole. According to the same www.develop-online.net story, UK studios are fighting for tax breaks that would help them remain more cost effective in the competitive global marketplace.

  • the little bit of the game i played was not that fun. i would agree with the score GI gave it.

Most of the outlets that praised the game were either based in the UK or had a Brit doing the review. It's also selling extremely well in England. It must appeal to the limey unconscious.

  • Amazing game i love it i think a lot of people expect the "prefect game" now a day where if it is not released by a big name developer the game does not get a fair chance but oh well i could care less about reviews as long as i enjoy a game it is good for me.

  • I don't fully agree with the review GI gave this game but I do understand why the game got the low rating. Single player story line in this title isn't going to win any game of the year awards, but the multiplayer is really where the meat of the game is. While jumping from tree top to tree top as a vicious hunting predator, or skimming the walls as an elusive alien, this titles multiplayer has had me foaming at the mouth with every stealth kill, disc throw and bullet fired.

  • Have not had the chance to play yet but it does seem as if the majority of people think its not all that bad.

  • Yeah uh..the game sucked.  Simple as that.

  • Every single Aliens and/or Predator game that has existed to date has been crap to average at best. These Brit reviews are the first positive remarks I've heard about this game. Could there be a little payola going on? Someone check their offices for new microwaves and fridges.

  • I'm enjoying the hell out of the game and the multiplayer is definitly addictive. Bring on plenty of dlc(hopefully).

  • Good for them. Game did not deserve to get slammed like it did by "certain places whose name eludes me".

  • I have been playing the Colonial Marines campaign and I'm enjoying it.

  • So, since the game is at least selling well, can gameinformer get us an update on Aliens: Colonial Marines. Its been a long time since that cover story

  • I played the demo and it was terrible.

  • I thought this game was a welcome departure from call of duty.

  • I think they forced you, Ben, to write this article ;)

  • I haven't played it but the media must be being a little too critical. On metacritic it got a 6.8 press average(and it was weighed down by a 2.5), but the user average was 8.0, which is pretty good.

  • I really don't think it is as horrible as people have made it seem.

After playing 2 of the 3 campaigns, my only complaint is the ratio of appearances of Predators vs Marines & Aliens.  The game practically just focuses on the Aliens.  You only see the Predators once or twice.

And in case anybody was wondering, the campaign I have yet to play is the Predator one.

  • @ghostpig about reviewers being paid off, someone should check for new microwaves and fridges in all of the offices of the people who gave GTA 4 a perfect score and goty.

  • I just finished the Marine campaign, and while it was far from perfect, it was still fun. Rebellion didn't infuse any originality into it, so I find it confusing that they expected great review all around. The Marine Campaign was pretty dull and by the numbers. It always saddens me when Developers do not even try to do anything original, and then get upset when the game doesn't sell like crazy.

Again, it isn't bad. I had some fun with it. Who knows, maybe the Aliens and Predator Campaigns will be awesome, we shall see.

Oh, and what's up with not letting me easily see how many collectibles I have left in each level, Rebellion?? You let me see how many I collected at the Stats menu at the end of each level, but you do not let me go back and see which levels I need to revisit to fin missing collectibles. That's just bad design.

  • i agree this game didnt live up to the hype but i would have given this game atleast a 7 a 5.5 is bein pretty harsh

  • I played the demo and the alien and marines characters were terrible and the aliens were especially ineffective. You can use the tail but it does not feel powerful. I never was able to play as a predator, and the people I talked to liked the predator, but that is not enough especially when the multiplayer is so terrible with the balancing of each race against one another. Also the brits developed this and are really buying it the most...they support their british developers.
