Jimi Hendrix To Grace Cover of Rock Band?

by Matt Helgeson on Feb 17, 2010 at 09:34 AM

Janie Hendrix, stepsister of the late guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, says that a Rock Band title based around his life and music is in development. In a lengthy interview conducted with the L.A. Times, Janie Hendrix, who controls the guitarist’s estate, says that a new deal signed with Sony Music promises that Hendrix back catalog will be available through “every type of media,” including video games. Hendrix told the L.A. Times that Jimi Hendrix themed Rock Band is scheduled for release before the end of the year.

However, after speaking with a MTV Games/Harmonix representative, things seem a little less certain. Here is the official statement:

“While we have not made any official announcements regarding Jimi Hendrix and Rock Band, we are excited to say that we are in discussions to bring more of his music to our platform. Stay tuned.”

So, do these discussions to bring “more of his music” to the platform involve a complete standalone title like The Beatles: Rock Band or just more Hendrix DLC? It’s too soon to tell at this point. Either way, more music by one of rock’s greatest guitarists is good news for fans of the genre.

Any new Hendrix music in the Rock Band franchise will be part of a slate of new products being planned to coincide with the 40th anniversary of his death. In addition to the game, new deluxe reissues of the three original Hendrix studio albums are being prepared with new “making of” DVD interviews featuring Jimi Hendrix Experience members Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, as well as others involved in the recordings.

An album of previously unreleased recordings called Valleys of Neptune is also in works, which features songs recorded in 1969 after the breakup of the original  Jimi Hendrix Experience lineup.
