Midway Games Disappear From XBLA

by Tim Turi on Feb 17, 2010 at 09:50 AM

Paperboy, Rootbeer Tapper, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Defender, Cyberball; these are all Midway games that have been de-listed from Xbox Live Arcade. These games have been with XBLA for a very long time, and Xbox Live’s Major Nelson has explained their absence.

“Some XBLA titles are no longer available for purchase from Xbox LIVE Arcade due to publisher evolving rights and permissions,” said Major Nelson on Twitter earlier today. There’s no mention that this has anything to do with Xbox Live’s upcoming Game Room, which will feature the full gambit of Midway’s classic arcade titles. Xbox Live users who’ve already purchased the games will be able to continue playing them and can re-download them as usual.

I feel bad for the poor sap who was just about to purchase Gauntlet or Smash TV when the games mysteriously vanished. Anybody mourning the loss of these retro downloadables?
