Sony Reports PS3 Shortages From Holiday Demand

As a result of strong hardware sales over this past holiday, there have been reported shortages of PS3's making it tough for retailers to keep up with exceptional demand for the console.

"We're working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months," said Sony's Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications.

One of our readers, Adriel Bean, contacted us regarding shortages after scouting several retail outlets for PS3's with no success.

"The strong demand carrying through the holidays was evident and early in the month we [knew] there was going to be limited supply of the PS3 at retail in January," Seybold told Joystiq. "We're working closely with the retail channel to meet this demand, but expect tight supply for the coming months."

Have any of you tried picking up a PS3 over the past few weeks? Do you work at an electronics retailer and noticed more customers wanting to get their hands on Sony's console? Share your stories in the comments section.

  • I've already got all three current generation consoles so I'm glad I don't have to deal with the shortage. The only one ever hard for me to find was the WII back in the day you couldn't find it anywhere. I guess I have noticed the PS3 isle has been PS3less the past few times I went to buy a game.

  • How long is "the coming months"?  I've been trying hard, but some estimates say I can't get my ps3 for another 2 weeks!?

By the times Sony actually has enough ps3's out there, Project Natal will be out, and I personally don't see using the ps3 as a gaming system after that (as long as Project Natal works correctly).

  • I work at a Target in Minneapolis and I know we'll get 3 PS3s in about every week or so and they are gone by the very next day. Being a PS3 and 360 owner myself, it's kind of funny to watch all the PS3s flying off the shelves so fast while the Xbox 360s just sit there collecting dust. *Note: we are consistently sold out of Wiis as well. And should there be apostrophes after the consoles' name when pluralized? I hate poor grammar.

  • Doesn't sound quite as big as the wii rush but, the ps3 is older. well anyways thats good that there getting more sales.

  • No shortages at any of the electronics stores I visit in the Houston area.

  • Sounds like people are really beginning to flock to the PS3. I had anticipated this since it is obvious that the PS3 is in it for the long haul more than any other system.

  • Yea im glad i already have a PS3......but a lot of my friends and roomates are planning to buy one by March.....Sony better get those systems out cause it wld be sad and dumb for them to have no PS3s on store shelves by March especially when they have Heavy Rain comn in a couple weeks and in March they have 2 heavy hitters.....Final Fantasy13 and GodOfWar3.......wit these games alone Sony will sell huge amounts of systems......so unless they want to see wat cld possibly be one of there biggest selling months slip away they better get on it and fill those empty shelves

  • I already have a 360 so it's all good. If I had a PS3 I just wouldn't have the time to experience all the games forboth the 360 and the PS3 as I do still live in the real world unfortunately.

  • its the blu ray player

  • Its really weird that there are "shortages" of PS3's I remember when you'd see 50 of them at Best Buy because nobody wanted to buy one.

  • At my Gamestop in South Jersey, we have been consistently sold out of Wiis and PS3s since at least late November.  Glad I got both of mine last year.

  • Go SOOOOOOONNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wonder if it has anything to do with Bioshock 2 and God of War III. Oh well, good thing I got mine two years ago.

  • Ok I applaud Sony for finally dropping the price to a more competitive point, and for making an admittedly fantastic system.

But I feel annoyed whenever I see these sales reports from Sony, because they act like PS3 is such a juggernaut game machine. The fact is that a massive portion of PS3 sales are due to its Blu-Ray player and nothing else. Working in games retail from August-January, I saw about 1/2 of my PS3's go to Home Theater customers who only wanted it for movies, NOT for gaming.

And the shortages started in Decemeber, when Sony ran a deal where you got a FREE PS3 when you bought one of their TV's. We were never even close to running out until that deal started.

So why are there shortages? Because THEY WERE GIVING THE THING AWAY. Again, its definitely a worthy system, but those sales numbers are deceiving if you're looking at it in terms of just gaming machines.

  • And frankly, their reasons for touting these sales numbers and acting like its all game customers are proven correct by the comments here. The readers posting here are excited at PS3's growing popularity, and if the system is growing in popularity more people are likely to get it.

So it was a smart marketing decision for them to give them away free. Too bad it gouges their wallet.

  • I had to drive to a town an hour and a half away that was kind of in the wilderness to get one a month or so ago.

  • I agree with ^.  Sony, I think, is just trying to get so publicity.  I mean, the PS3 sold far less than the 360 in January, so Sony obviously isn't making very many of them or something.

  • Yeah, I heard something at Gamestop like that.

  • I agree with Dominic DePalma, the PS3 was in it for the long run, and it's finally paying off with some highly-anticipated triple-A titles coming out like Heavy Rain, FFXIII, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5....the rise of the dark horse is upon us!

  • All of the EB Games around me have anywhere from one to none in stock. I know this because I am friends with all of them....almost. I was told that since the price drop they sell out of them faster than anything else a the store.

@ GWNightmare...The only reason the PS3 is selling is because people want a Bluray player??? Wow, why do you even pretend to know what you are talking about??? First off, Bluray players have dropped in price significantly, and you can get a good, name brand Bluray player for $150 now. Why would someone buy a $300 PS3 when they can get one for half the price??? Your logic is just sad.

People buy the PS3 because of the awesome exclusives. So many great games are on the platform that it drives sales. It is very simple.
