Microsoft: Natal To Have Five-Year Lifespan

by Matt Helgeson on Feb 16, 2010 at 05:37 AM

Speaking to gaming website CVG, Xbox director of product management Aaron Greenberg said Microsoft expects its upcoming hands-free, motion control peripheral to have a lifespan up of at least five years. He also confirmed that the Natal would be available for the holiday shopping season this year.

The comment was in response to CVG asking Greenberg to respond to criticisms that Natal was simply a “jazzed-up EyeToy” at the company’s recent X10 media event.

"We obviously could have done a motion controller if we'd have wanted to do that, but we felt that would be a much more interruptive experience,” commented Greenberg. “We had an opportunity here to really do something that's transformative and brings a whole new category of experiences to life.”

He went on to predict that the gaming public would embrace the new peripheral over the course of the next few years.

“"The richness of the technology is going to really enable experiences that never had existed before," said Greenberg. "And we're not just speaking about what we're doing this year, but I think two, three, four, five years from now as this evolves.”
