Ubisoft to Release Franchise Titles Every Year

Nothing can stop the hand of an assassin, and publisher/developer Ubisoft is determined to keep making a killing with franchises like Assassin's Creed. The company says it wants to give gamers a new game in its franchises every 12 to 18 months.

Speaking to gamesindustry.biz, Ubisoft's EMEA MD Alain Corre stated that the company would like to follow in the footsteps of competitor Activision, who puts out some sort of Call of Duty every year provided that Ubisoft's developers "create something innovative every year that can surprise the end user..." Ubisoft is already moving towards this goal: Recently it announced that it will release a new Ezio Auditore Assassin's Creed adventure in 2010.

We all love Call of Duty, but is emulating that franchise the best idea? Will games in a single franchise be split between different Ubisoft developers to the point that gamers will experience a difference in quality? To use Corre's own example of Call of Duty further, gamers can smell the difference between the CoD titles put out by Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Plus, with games like Splinter Cell Conviction having gone through numerous delays, what kind of strain will this aggressive schedule have on the titles and the rest of the company in general? It will be interesting to see if the company can straddle that very fine line between capitalization and quality.

  • Bad idea ubisoft

  • I dunno if Ubisoft can pull it off, but if they do, they'll be my favorite developer ever.

An Assassin's Creed every year? I'll take that, thank you very much.

  • I am unsure how I feel about this. If they can continue to put out quality games, more could never hurt. I just fear that they will not be able to keep up the quality if the pump them out too fast...

  • The last thing we need is another Activision. I can barely stand the first.

  • How is this bad? Its going to make Ubisoft more money and keep us(the players)entertained

  • I have to agree.  I have not bought and will not buy a Treyarch CoD game unless they improve the quality of their games to be on par with Infinity Ward's.  I feel like a restrictive annual deadline is a good way to make a quick buck and make gamers feel ripped off at the same time.

  • sounds like a bad idea to me

they should learn from Activision's mistakes

  • Bad idea. Horrible idea. Absolutely repulsive. Bleh.

  • Every 12 to 18 months is going to put some serious strain on the developers if they plan on keeping the same house working on the same IP. Also, it seems like that's too much saturation of a an IP in a short period of time. Look at how it burned out the guitar games. I'm thinking there's going to be a sacrifice of quality for quantity in this situation. Call it a hunch.

  • Bad idea.  Just finished getting a platinum trophy in ACII and I don't want to even step into that world again for at least 2 years...especially if its going to be Ezio and Italy again.

'Sandbox' games are too time/mentally consuming to come out in back to back years without getting old fast.

  • Sellouts!

It's hard to emulate Activision's business model and maintain my respect.

  • This really bothers me, just like the same announcement for Call of Duty did. If a developer ends up putting out a game every year, that's great. My favorite developers Naughty Dog and Insomniac have a long history of doing that. But a publisher announcing "We going out of our way to have one every year" says to me that they're exploiting and have little to no dedication to quality. All my faith in Activision is gone, but I didn't expect this from Ubisoft.

  • Quality over quantity please. Ubisoft, I always figured you for a company with integrity, don't disappoint me now.

  • I'm not sure what to think.  If the quality ends up staying up to par, then good for them.  Still, this seems like a red flag.

Also, a shooter like Call of Duty can go on for a long time... (tho I still can't believe the seventh one is coming out soon) but how long does a franchise like Assassin's Creed last?  We certainly don't want them to kill the franchise by over using it.

  • I don't object to this on the basis that Ubisoft's trying to create more profit. If they want to put out an Assassin's Creed or a Splinter Cell or a Rainbow Six or a Prince of Persia every year, there's nothing wrong with that by itself.

The problem I have is that, like this article pointed out, to make a decent game you NEED a two year (or more) development cycle - otherwise you're just pumping out Maddens. The way developers get around this is by having two studios work on the franchise in alternating years. But you inherently get into the issue thaat one of those studios will always be better - better storyboarders, better environmental artists, better voice actors, etc etc.

I'm all for more games from Ubisoft - their pedigree is very very high. In fact, they're probably the company I have the most games from in my game library (I think I own every Tom Clancy Game). I just hope that trying to drop an installment of a series every year doesn't reduce that quality they're known for.

  • It wouldn't be bad if they came out with a franchise hit every 6 months, like ghost recon, then assassins creed, then splinter cell..etc.  Give them like 2 years to develop another hit though.

  • I hate seeing this kind of stuff. As an aspiring game designer myself I hate to see great ideas get run into the ground until nothing is left. They begin to lose their integrity after a while. If that while is not long enough the franchise will be lost a lot sooner. I can see why sports game franchises need to be churned out annually to keep up with the sport, but I do not think that should apply across all genres. However, if the games keep their freshness and people keep buying them I suppose it will never stop.

  • ur making a big mistake Ubisoft

  • If they can keep the quality as high as Assassin's Creed 2, i have no complaints

  • I will lose respect for Ubisoft if they do this. There's no way that the developers can pump out new innovative titles of the same series every year. No way.
