Game Informer 2.1 Is Live!

by Nick Ahrens on Feb 10, 2010 at 06:06 AM

Hello everyone! Nick here to give you the lowdown on the latest push to the Game Informer website. We’re always looking into new ideas and possible changes as time goes on, and 2.1 is our first batch of updates. In fact, now that we've launched 2.1, we're already planning for 2.2! Among a large list of changes and additions: we have a new video player, forum fixes, a Bozo feature, a new theme, and small fixes here and there to improve your surfing experience. Read on for the full list of things to expect.

Video Player:

We’ve got a brand new video player that is working better than ever. We’ve moved to HD as the default standard here at Game Informer and will never charge you or ask you to sign up just to watch a video in HD (though we’d love it if you joined our community!). Because this is the new standard for television and gaming, we feel that’s how you should preview your media. We’ve been working hard to get this HD player to run well for just about everyone, but as always it’s helpful for you, the user, to make sure your browser (preferably Firefox) and Flash player are up to date. This will make a big difference for watching videos here and on the rest of the internet.

We’ve also made embedding video on Game Informer easier than ever. For help on that, click here.

Lights Off:
We know that a lot of you are night owls and surf the web in the late hours. The last thing you want is a bright screen blinding you and making your eyes sore. We’ve added a little light switch to the top right of every page that will allow you to turn the lights off and surf Game Informer in the dark. Go ahead and try it out right now.

Newsletter:
If you’ve been with us before, then you know we’ve run a newsletter in the past, and we’re excited to say that it’s coming back in a big way. And don’t worry, it won’t be a bunch of spam. We’re going to jam-pack our weekly newsletter with the hottest news stories of the week plus the latest previews and reviews. We’re even going to take a look at what you, the user, have done over the course of the week by highlighting your blogs. Each newsletter will have hand-picked user content and we couldn’t be more excited. You can make sure you’re signed up for the newsletter by selecting Newsletter Sign-Up in the Take Part menu. If you’re already signed up, it will let you know. If you’re not already signed up, follow the easy steps to get it. If you’re not a member of Game Informer already and are interested, you can still sign up.

Bozo Feature:
If you’re a member, you’re probably sick of all of the annoying “First!” posts. Or maybe just sick of the trolls waiting under the bridge to jump all over your comment. Or heck, maybe you are that troll. Well rather than just deleting comments, our mods now have a Bozo feature (among some other new tools) that allows them to just turn it off to the rest of us. So if xxTrollFace69xx posts a First comment or something lame that annoys the rest of us, we can bozo their comments. They’ll never even know. The rest of us won't even see the comment but the user will be able to revel in their freshly trolled post all they want. But it will be a table for one, because they’re the only person that will see it. Ever.

In the end, we’re actually very proud of the community that has quickly grown here on the new website. From returning alumni to new users, a lot of the posting and content you’ve been doing has really shone through.

The Laboratory:
Just as the name suggests, The Laboratory is a place for experiments. Our programmer Sean and I will be trying out various new ideas for future site functionality there and you’ll be able to check it out firsthand! We’re not launching with much and have no set schedule, but check back often to see what we’re up to.

Surfing Improvements:
There have also been a number of smaller enhancements to the site that will help improve the overall surfing experience. We now will remember settings for sorting within the landing pages as you click back and forth between stories. We’ve also made some enhancements to the forums too and things like locked posts will now be clearly stated. We’ve also cleaned up some of the posting issues in the forums related to Firefox.

All of this and more has been added, so poke around and see what’s new!
