The lights are on
EA executives dropped the news that BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG is expected to ship in fiscal 2011 in a conference call with investors. This puts the release in April at the earliest, and clarifies the original "Spring 2011" launch window.CEO John Riccitiello noted that while the game will hopefully be a profitable venture, EA's cash flow is running slow right now. "MMOs can cost as much as two to six, seven times as much as a front-line title, if they’re done right.... It is a major investment for us."The trailer that EA showed at last year's E3, while impressive, had a higher budget than many full-fledged games (no, I'm not exaggerating). Are all those truckloads of money going to result in the kind of game that we've been hoping for? Are you going to drop your current MMO, or take your first dip into the genre, when The Old Republic finally comes out?
John Ricitiello doesn't always say things that I agree with, but in this case, the man knows MMOs. Clearly. He sees why MMOs are difficult to bring to market, and he likely recognizes a lack of refinement at launch as a significant reason why every MMO that has had to jockey with WoW has basically failed. Most importantly though, he underscores the fact that MMOs, when managed properly, take a lot of time, energy and resources. They're going to make sure they get this one right, I have a good feeling. While not seeing TOR for at least another year is saddening news on some level, I have to say that I couldn't support the wisdom of their decision any more enthusiastically.
it better not be subscription or im not buying it and i really want it
"I will probably take a month off from WoW (or at least spend less time with WoW) while I try this game out. As far as I'm concerned, this game has a month to impress me before I make a final decision. I have high hopes, but to be honest, it has its work ahead of it if it wants to pull me away from WoW."
This couldn't sum up any better the sentiment that has been chewing up MMOs and spitting them out since 2004. Why leave WoW? Massive player base, shakedown is finished, solid, dependable, refined game. Few if any kinks to work out. *Polished.*
It's an unfair standard, but any game that wants to carve out some market share and turn profits will need to be better than a launch title upon release. v1.00, at least in the traditional sense, is not an option. Otherwise, people like the one I quoted above won't give the game a fair shake, or hang around for a few patches to give the publisher a chance to get their act together. Competitors have been releasing nothing but inferior products relative to WoW, but what is needed is a substitute.
Lastly, all the talk of "toppling" WoW is more than a bit ridiculous, and no reasonable publisher is going to be seeking that out. What they'll want is a respectable slice of the pie. WoW has become more than a game; it is a cultural phenomenon. People who never played games in the past and likely won't in the future currently play and immensely enjoy WoW. There are t-shirts, board games, trading cards, and plush dolls. WoW will either self-implode, fade away, or will be replaced voluntarily by its creator. However, the notion that it's even remotely probable that another game can become what WoW has become in a cultural context is far-fetched at best.
I'll take my first sink into being pledged to a MMO. I've abandoned some in the past... for several reasons.
man i cant wait for it to come out... im going to be on it 24/7... ultra nerd!! lol
I would love to get this, Bioware did a fantastic job with KOTOR so I'm pretty sure they can pull thid off. Although I just can't afford a monthly subscription, because I have no doubt that's what it's going to be. I really wanted to get Star Trek Online when it came out but I realized I just can't pay a monthly fee. If any part of the game was free, with optional payments/subsciptions maybe, then I'd probably get it and subscribe on and off whenever I had the money for it. Hopefully in a year I'll be able to get this because it's definately a title to be excited for.
Sounds like their putting a lot of effort into this. I'm tempted to get it, but i've got a few 2010 games to get b4 this even comes out.
Plenty of companies have tried and failed to be a WoW killer. There are amazing companies that came out with recent games that just were nothing compared to WoW. I hope to god this game does it. It looks amazing and BIOware made a lot of good rpgs that I love and is on my top list for them.
Aion Online- Gorgeous game the art in it the character design/mob design. The pvp always alive and interesting. Flying around?!?! How unique!!!! But in the end what did Aion become? Like any other Korean mmo
grind-grind-grind-grind-grind-grind-grind-grind-grind-grind ANNNNDDDD some more GRIND!
Lord of the Rings: Online- This game took WoW pve system up a notch and made it an intractable raiding system. The whole group skill chain thing is very cool. I loved raiding in this game it was amazing, but the PvP system was just trash. I got bored of it once I was end game.
Warhammer Online - Cartoony graphics but was designed from Mythic, the company that made PvP as amazing as it should it. They invented RvR which is now used in most modern day MMOs'. The whole group up quests was pretty cool too. The game itself was way to buggy even after the patches I couldn't get into it.
youll get it but im dissapointed that they delayed it
it is coming out but im dissapointed that it isnt earlier
That's a lifetime in video game time...(2011).
Looks like I'm going to build a computer next year. Gonna need to get some good hardware.
I'm pretty excited for this granted I'm not a Star Wars fan.
This may be the first MMO I play, and I'm not even a big Star Wars fan. I don't know what it is about this game, but it just looks like it has a lot of support behind it and will be fun to play. Here's hoping for the best!
Money doesnt make a good game. good ideas do. I really hope this isnt just going to ape WoW. Otherwise...im going to be skeptical
Bah! Too far away.
I want to play this so bad....
Maybe by 2011 I'll own a computer good enough to play MMORPG's on. This looks like a great game. I'm big on Star Wars and RPG's so this is a match made in Heaven!
