FFXIII Producers Say Game Will Use Phoenix Down On Japanese Game Industry

FFXIII is selling pretty well in Japan, and the producers of the game have some ambitious expectations of what they think the game will do for the Japanese game industry.

When asked by the European PlayStation Blog on their feelings about the Japanese game industry, the producers responded “Some people have been saying that the Japanese game industry is dead, and all that…. I dunno. I will say that Final Fantasy XIII is one really epic title for high definition consoles. With this game, we are going to resurrect the whole thing.”

We hope that Square Enix can follow through on this resurrection. However, if they would have cast Regen they never would have ended up in this mess.

  • Awesome. I want FFXIII

  • I love FF. Me too StarKIller.

  • I might get this though I am not a big fan.

  • They said the Titanic was unsinkable too. One game reviving an entire industry? I don't think so. For one single game to bring back an industry you'd need something as fresh and innovative as Super Mario Bros. when it first came out, not the 13th edition of a paint-by-numbers RPG series. Sure, FF's are pretty but it's kind of old hat by now.

    Glorioush Nippon!

  • a really good point Ghostpig.

  • Yeah I'd have to agree with Ghostpig, the Japanese game market needs some innovation. FFXIII might be a good step in that direction, but as I'm still waiting for the U.S. release, we'll see...

  • This... is HUGE!

  • Phoenix Down.... Regen.....

I'm just glad it was GI that used the puns and not Square Enix

  • Public Sedoku!

  • No one's catching my Angry Final Fantasy Nerd references? You guys suck. ;)

  • As well as this game will do here, I really don't think it'll pull the numbers as well as a Call of Duty or Halo...is that sad or am I a glass half empty kinda guy?

  • @ Ghostpig

Okay, I'll give you that resurrecting an entire industry via a staple game is pretty bold. However, throwing in the paint-by-numbers analogy was almost as bad as comparing this story to the Titanic. If anything Final Fantasy remains consistent only in that every title (I say that loosely considering Dissidia, etc) was an RPG. If you want to hack that up to a lack of innovation, well... Caramel covered fiddlesticks. If anything, SE consistently angers its fan-base by tearing up the foundations of previous iterations of the series (I swear if I hear one more person ask for materia to make a comeback...). That is all

  • I think the comments where Square/Enix has stated that they're veering away from traditional Japanese rpg's and towards different game types fly in the face of these comments where FFXIII is supposed to revive the ailing Japanese game industry. If this game is the last gasp of a dying genre, then how is it supposed to save Japanese gaming?

  • Final Fantasy has never really captured my attention.

I would always have the choice of buying it as a child for the Playstation but it never really caught my attention.

Today, I'm still surprised Square Enix is still going on with the title. I guess I just wasn't a loyal fan.

    :(

  • @SeraphicRage

I was comparing the "save the industry" statement to the "unsinkable Titanic" statement in terms of boldness. Context, son... get you some. I'm not saying FF's are bad games, I'm just tired of seeing some androgynous, fun-sized David Bowie trying to take the lead and be all deep with some hidden past and parental issues. There's your consistency, I guess.

All flash, no substance. It's pretty wrapping paper on a gift card to Office Depot. The video game equivalent to N*Sync and 98 Degrees. Yes, yes I went there.

  • Addendum: A gift card to Office Depot could actually be useful. I should've used McDonald's gift card instead. Sorry.

  • Not only will we see a resurgence of japanese games but this game will make it so that United States hands over the entire country to Japan and we will than have learn Japanese and buy their games...

No this will not do well too much hype...and Ghost Pig is right these games are the N'Sync of gaming but I still love them so...*** my inner nerd girl

  • regen... but its so much harder to find than a pheonix down...

  • Yezzir

  • Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing FF's by any means. They are always quality games. But thinking that after 12 iterations plus spin-offs that Sq/E isn't leading you into a wall with a carrot is absurd. It's just more sprinkles on top of gummi bears on top of Oreo crumbles on top of vanilla ice cream. Everyone loves ice cream but vanilla still tastes like vanilla.
