Xbox Live Closure Bums Out Bungie

Microsoft recently announced that the original Xbox Live will be put to rest on April 15. This means that dedicated gamers still playing old Xbox games on the original system or on the 360 will have to move on with their lives. Flagship Xbox developer Bungie has sounded off on the matter.

"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back, we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans," said Bungie on its website.

“Halo 2 has been at or near the top of the Xbox Live charts for original games since it launched over five years ago,” Bungie continued. “We're extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox Live. We've had some great fun together, including far too many humpday losses to even recount.”

There has got to be a lot of people still playing the hell out of Halo 2 or the other great Xbox games. Are any of you affected by this closure?

  • first and that is too bad. Halo 2 was BA. But it makes sense. Oh well

  • Staff

    Port it to 360.

  • I am not affected, because I don't play Live. BUT, I do think this is stupid. does Microsoft think that focusing on the 360 ONLY will get them more money? NO. Look at Sony. They have supported the PS2, even after it was declared last Gen, and are still making tons of money off it. Would that have happened if they left it in the dust and just said, "Whatever!" to it? No.

  • I'm so sad. I still play Halo 2 all the time. Now its gone forever on Xbox live. ohh well

  • Everyone who owns any Original Xbox game is affected because Microsoft recently pulled all downloadable content from all Original Xbox games.

Which means if you wanted to play a few games of Halo 2 and did not download the map packs, you're out of luck.

I hope Microsoft can address this issue soon.

  • @The Observer

The difference between the PS2 and the original Xbox is that the first xbox has been pretty much declared dead since the 360 launched, unlike the ps2 which still has a dedicated fanbase.

  • Sounds like a good opportunity for a map pack for Halo 3?

  • god halo 2... the memories.

  • I am I love playing Halo 2...

  • Just get with the rest of the consoles microsoft and make it free to play games online.

  • Call me crazy, but I actually never played Halo 2.  I jumped into Halo 3 over Christmas.  I did hear that Halo 2 was the best Halo game.  Now I feel that I might have missed out on a good opportunity to play it.

  • That sucks and begs the question: Will MS do this again with 360 games? I hope not, but I wouldn't doubt it if they did.

  • Nah. I used to play some Halo 2 on the 360 but I slowly transitioned to Halo 3. However, right now my time is completely monopolized by Mass Effect.

  • Looks like its time for everyone to trade in their Xbox360 for a PS3 because M$ will do the same thing with the 360 when their next console arrives.

  • Seems so sad that the original Live will die... though I never did play Halo. And I mean any Halo by the way.

PS2 woot! I still use mine..... sometimes!

  • @ TheOpethAffinity, i feel the same, i started playing halo in june of 09 and never played anything related to halo beffore, now i may never get too play it in its entirerty

  • @Zekk93: Maybe if Microsoft hyped it some more, released new games on it, and improved live, it wouldn't have been declared dead.

  • Farewell halo 2! you will be missed!!

  • I enjoyed playing it again for the nostalgia factor.
