Gran Turismo Series Hits 55 Million Mark

There is no official release date for Gran Turismo 5 yet, but it looks like the game already has big shoes to fill. Developer Polyphony Digital has announced that the Gran Turismo franchise – to date – has sold over 55 million copies worldwide.

Taking a look at the sales list below, if history holds Gran Turismo 5 has a good chance of selling at least 9 million copies worldwide – assuming that the public's taste for sim-racing is as strong as it was when Gran Turismo 4 released in 2005 for the PS2. If sales of GT 5: Prologue is any indication, selling over 4.5 million units, then it looks like people are more than ready to see what full-featured sim-racing is like on the PlayStation 3. Even the shell-of-a-game that was Gran Turismo for PSP (head over to see our review) almost hit two million in sales.

How well do you think GT 5 will do when all is said and done?

Looks like a cry for relevancy. You know what else would work? Releasing a game!!!

  • @Bertz - second that.  And no, I'm not saying what number post I am like an idiot.

  • 55 million game sales is always relevant, but I am getting sick of waiting for GT5.

  • But where the hell is GT5! Give us GT5 already!

Lets just wait and see how much profit they will be able to make out of GT5 considering that it has a budget of 60 million $.

  • that's a big number...

  • Instead of putting all their focus and resources on GT5 they waste their time on crap like GT5:Prologue and GT PSP.

Maybe people would have been playing GT5 by now if they were completely focused on GT5.

  • Yeah uh..wait for it to get announced for a date, then pushed back etc....

  • Forza 4 will be out before this game.

  • Nice, congrats on Polyphony Digital for hitting the 55 million mark.

I for one can't wait for GT5 and will be buying that indefinitely when it comes out.

  • Wow. Gran Turismo has sold alot of copys

  • As long as GT5 has been in development and based on the quality of previous GT titles, it seems that the newest iteration is bound to be great.

That said, as long as the expected quality is there people will definitely buy it; there are not a lot of quality racers available. The only other PS3 game in direct competition is NFS:Shift and I'm sure GT5 can blow that one away.

I'd get a copy if I had a PS3 to play it on.  If it releases before the Apocalypse.

  • I for one like donkey's!

  • I'm not that into racing games, but I've started to change my mind when I first decided to read about GT5 and look at some screenshots. Impressive sales though, nice job. Now all we need is a concrete release date so that we can actually get the game.

  • well done GT ive got all the games for PSone

  • I personally cant stand racers. I just think of it as staying in control and racing around in a circle with shiny cars. I only like a select few: Need for Speed Underground and Dirt 2.

  • umm...great. I dont really go for the hyper real racing sims tho. Why do that when you could be playing something, uh, fun?

  • Lols if you look at as GT4 prologue to GT4 then GT5 prologue to GT5 can we assume GT5 will sell 37,820,000..... LMAO I doubt it, stupid calculator.  GT5 will probably sell a lot though.

  • Good for them, but just get working on GT5.  I don't know if I'll care about it by that point.  I second the comment about Forza 4 being out.  Forza 3 did a bunch of really cool stuff to put it ahead of the Gran Turismo series (rewind button!), and I wonder if that has anything to do with the most recent delay for GT5.

  • Lol i really hope its as good as there making it out to be.

  • Gran Turismo Concept Series and Gran Turismo 4: Prologue are the only two I haven't bought but I did pick up Tourist Trophy for PS2.

GT5 pre orderd and day one, midnight, kill for it? whatever. You know when it comes out that its going to be Gran Turismo.
