Samus Gets "Emotional" In Metroid: Other M

Though it was announced at last year's E3, Nintendo's latest Metroid game, Metroid: Other M, remains largely a mystery. The first real details are slowly starting to slip through the cracks though. Andriasang is reporting via an article in Famitsu that Other M will feature a side of Samus we've never seen before.

Metroid co-creator Yoshi Sakomoto explained:

"...different from the rest of the series, this time we're strongly depicting the human side of Samus through such things as movies. She's a strong woman, but she also has a fragile side. We want to make a game whose charms can be felt from the story areas and these human touches as well. It's an action game, but it's capable of having a clear emotional side."

Sakomoto also noted that though Team Ninja is helping transform the game from a traditional 2D Metroid into a 3D action game, the "ideal form of the old Metroid" is still their goal.

A bit more concerning, Sakomoto admits that Team Ninja, CG studio D-Rockets, and the internal Nintendo team have had some problems. He said that the team has worked through any issues they've had, but that's always scary to hear about a game I really want to turn out good.

What are your thoughts on Metroid: Other M so far? Worried about the troubles they've had? Looking forward to exploring the softer side of Samus?

  • It won't be Super Metroid. They should just redo that one with new graphics. Leave all the glitches, one wall- wall jumps and all the tricks from the SNES version intact.

  • I'm excited for this one.  Finally, a Wii game I'm excited about that doesn't invole Mario & Co.!

  • That's kind of like hearing Jack Bauer likes kittens, and there will be a cute kitty episode of 24.  Not sure we need a "softer" Samus.

  • So Nintendo and *TEAM NINJA* plan on creating a *STORY* that actually explores *FEELINGS*?

The highlighted spots indicate what corresponds with each other...

  • i have no idea whether this is going to be good or not, im going to like it either way cuz im a fanboy but in general idk

  • I really hope this pans out, because my faith in the new Zelda is paper-thin right now...

Sean I agree with you. To think this is the team that made Ninja Gaiden. Well maybe this will work better then we think it will.

  • Maybe they'll release an animated featurette on LifeTime.

Whatever this ends up being, the chances of it approaching Fusion level are extremely slim.

Also, Fusion is the Joe Mauer of Metroid games. Don't deny it.

  • The Prime series was great.  I just don't know enough about this game to get excited.  And I don't know about a touchy feely action game...  We shall see...

  • *positive skepticism*

  • Unfortunately the video footage does not impress me. Graphically... it looks like a 4 year old game. If the Wii and the Nintendo teams that make games exclusively for it want to impress us older gamers and bring us amazing titles like this and the new Zelda, Nintendo has to step its specs on its systems big time. I understand the want to have a system that is affordable and they rave about being the "best selling system" out of the current consoles, but lets face it, the only reason your system blew the others out of the water was because, for the longest time, this system was almost HALF the cost of the other systems. Also appealing the housewife with Wii fit and Wii resort etc... doesnt hurt. But for the true gamers? When was the last time you played a Wii GAME. Wii play and the like DONT count. For me, I havent played it since I finished Twilight Princess.. so almost 2 years?

    @Adam: I don't understand your analogy...but I liked Fusion.

  • Hmmm... does "more human side showing" and Team Ninja's involvement mean that Samus is going to be baring more skin and have some widly-bouncing CG body parts?

Because thats the human side that Team Ninja usually shows...

I really hope they wouldn't objectify an iconic character as great as Samus Aran. I fear they would if they could, but at least family-friendly Nintendo would prevent them.

  • i kinda think metroid fusion was the horror story part of the metroid series

  • @Phil: I think what adam is trying to say is that Fusion is the greatest metroid game ever in the same way that Joe Mauer is the greatest catcher ever.

  • It looked really good, I heard many people say oh it's going to be stupid because it isn't a FPS.  Well, it looks pretty good for now, let's see how it turns out.

  • i can't wait for this game

  • Looks good I'll buy it.
