The lights are on
The Final Fantasy VII remake is currently the most popular non-existent game in the industry. Rumors of a high-definition reimagining of the classic RPG are rekindled on a monthly basis, but most gamers aren't aware of the many technical hurdles such a project would present. Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase explains in an interview with Ultimania magazine (as reported by The Lost Gamer) that a Final Fantasy VII remake isn't just a simple matter of rebuilding a few assets. In order to create visuals that meet the modern standards, a team developing a Final Fantasy VII remake (which, to be clear, is not currently happening) would have to spend a great deal of time and effort designing a current-gen look for the game consistent with its roots.“This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy VII remake will happen or not," Kitase says. "It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time.”While we're on the subject of remakes that will probably never happen, what old games are you hoping against hope will get the current-gen treatment? no no no it should be easier...you have the plot, characters, and other general ideas. All you should have to do is redo all the graphics so it is not even like working on a full game. All of the beginning junk is already finished.
First! i hate myself for calling this
In that case, why not just have a straight port without the updated graphics, ala Banjo Kazooie? People will still enjoy it, won't they?
My top 3 remake wishlist:
1:Crystalis (NES)
2:Final Fantasy 7 (PS1)
3:Ogre Battle 64 (N64)
Thank God! I'm glad one of the most overrated games ever might not be remade.
What a cop out. How is that more difficult than an entirely new game few people care as much about (i.e. Nier)?
@ Vote 4 Pedro
We already have a straight port. You can download the full game off the store
Maybe instead of wasting time on crap like FFX or, even better, FFX-2 --- they could make FF VII. There is no reason not to do it, THEY WOULD MAKE A F-BOMB TON of MONEY!! Everyone whose ever picked up a PS controller wants this game. Why to they have to be F-Tards.
@kahrooch:
The point of this blog was to tell you everything that you just tried to argue about.
Try reading a little closer next time.
not a surprise, but then again as long as they bring out good Final Fantasy games then this is a non-issue. Personally I'm excited about all the parts of FFXIII and can't wait for news on Agito(sp?) and Versus.
well i called first but now i'm even more dumb, cuz i wasn't actually first.
I don't quite believe its as hard as he's making it out to be.
Anyways, I'd like to a next gen Ocarina of time.
@ DeadByDagger: ...oh.
Yet another reason I need a PS3. Rats!!!
Thank you for saying Crystalis, Jon

If it's so hard to make graphics for the ps3 then why don't they just remake it for the ps2? The late games from the ps2 era where great graphically and really most people just want a remake because of the horrible way the early 3D polygon graphics aged.
The current-gen look argument doesn't make sense in light of how well the cut scenes from the game have held up, if you base the in game character models on the cut scenes the style isn't an issue as far as I can see. (admittedly that might not be as far as I'd care to think.)
