World of Warcraft Auction House Opening In Real World

Non-World of Warcraft players constantly hear about how addictive Blizzard's hit MMO is. Recently they've had to watch it work its way into the lives of their loved ones even when they're not logged in via the introduction of The Armory, an official Blizzard tool that allows you to check out your characters' gear, Achievements, and more through any web browser. With recent news of another big update coming to the Armory, the addiction is about to get more powerful.

A post from a Blizzard employee on the official World of Warcraft forums reveals that the game's auction house will be receiving new out-of-game functionality through the Armory. Essentially, once the service launches, players will be able to access and use the in-game auction house through the Armory website or the Armory iPhone app, letting you take your lucrative in-game business dealings into the real world.

The post stressed that the new service is still being worked on and does not have an official release date set yet. It also noted that elements of the auction service will be "premium-based." Does this mean that players will be charged for each out-of-game auction house transaction that they make? Could Blizzard begin selling stuff through the auction house for real-world money (like they've already done with in-game pets)? We'll have to wait and see.

Until those details come in, though, consider me psyched. I'm looking forward to a time in the near future when I can spend half my days at work browsing the auction house and hunting down great deals.

  • I'd love to say "First!" but I will spare you all the tears...

I think this is realy cool, makes it easier for WoW savvy players to own the market. Except for that "Premium" thing, kinda knocks it down :S

  • Oh no... I remember when I used to play how much time I spent auction house sharking... this sort of thing would have killed me.

  • are you guys going to fix the video?

  • @IG-88: There is no video in this post.

  • this seems ok nothing for me because i don't play this game

  • I'm glad I'm out.

  • Great there goes most of the people I know....am I the only person left who doesn't play this?

  • Also, it's important to note that despite the "premium" caveat and the two vanity pets you can pay cash for, it's still not as shifty as the recent Champions Online Vibora Bay debacle and the Star Trek "pay for new races" plan Cryptic is throwing out.

But it saddens me that WoW is flexing to this trend.

  • I always go to the auction house

  • One word - ridiculous

  • *** world of war-crack.  keeping people addicted and making money off of it.

  • Wow. Pun intended

  • Awful.  Fail.  Next thing we know they will have some kind of futuristic eyewear that allows you to stay logged in the game 24/7.  I can see people getting in trouble with this.  Granted, it's their own d@mn fault for doing it, but Blizzard sure isn't helping.  Ugh...

  • It's going to decrease people's log time on ebay now b/c you don't need real money (minus the subscription fee).

  • this is another way for people to lose lives through wow.

  • WHAT?! Will it support addons like Auctioneer?

  • sounds cool it could add something for me to do with my armory app cuz i cant find any real reason for the armory. note: people who dont play wow why are you posting here? IM just saying no one wants to hear " sounds nice but i dont play this game" on every WoW news story.

  • I had a similar concept for FFXI. I thought what a great official iphone or computer app that would be to keep the auctions going strong even when a player is away from their main terminal. Sweet idea. Even though i don't play WoW its good news for all MMOs I'd think.

  • Wow....what a crazy idea, lol.  This is going to get people even more addicted.
