UPDATE: Things That Are Awesome: Darksiders Sold Well Enough For Sequel

UPDATE: Sometimes news gets out into the world, and sometimes that news is just plain wrong. In this case, that’s a good thing. THQ released its official financial statements earlier today, and it looks like the company is doing well. Darksiders, specifically, sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide in its first four weeks. Looks like Mr. Greenwald jumped the gun a little bit. Even more good news, THQ CEO Brian Farrell has even confirmed that the company is planning a sequel to the game in fiscal year 2012, so if you haven’t played Darksiders yet you might want to seriously consider helping them break that 2 million mark.

ORIGINAL STORY: Why aren’t you buying Darksiders? It was a good game. According to THQ’s Q3 earning report, however, the game is selling well under expectations.

As Destructoid.com recently reported, industry investment and banking specialist Todd Greenwald said, “[Darksiders] didn't perform up to THQ's expectations, likely selling less than 1 million units despite heavy marketing dollars [and] 2-3 years of development costs." We’re not exactly sure what “heavy marketing” means, since we don’t remember seeing that many Darksiders ads, but we’re still disappointed to hear that the game is underperforming.

We admire the work Vigil Games did on Darksiders and we expect big things from its sophomore release. We just hope THQ sees the same potential in the fledgling developer that we do.

  • This game didnt get much publicity. I didnt see a single commercial for it, (although I am sure there were some) and I only saw one poster in my local gamestop. It doesnt surprise me that this didnt sell as well as expected.

  • how about games not being 50 to 60 bucks at launch, but like 40.  besides the reviews gave me mixed feeling about it.

  • Yup, I never saw anytihng on Darksiders until the week before it came out, and that was a review on a gaming site. I tend to plan out my month to month game purchases, and last minute titles like this, rarely make the cut when it comes to buying stuff when it comes out.

Having played a little of it, I do intend to buy it, but I'll pick it up used later down the road.

  • thats to bad. it is sort of at the bottom of my list of games to play

  • I had never heard of this game until I saw an article on this sight one day. Although I intend to try it some day, but there are too many games and too little time.

  • There are just too many other big games that have come out recently (and are still to drop) that received much bigger advertising pushes, therefore more saturation, and are consequently vying for my attention. And, as kitten noted, when you pop that $60 price tag on there, well... there are only so many titles a man can afford to try new.

This one, while I love Apocalyptic story lines and Joe Mad's art, this one just isn't quite as exciting to me as Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, and Red Dead Redemption.

  • I might get this

  • I didn't even know about it until I read a news post about Reiner terrifying the other office members with his acts of violence...  It's unfortunate that games like this and Brutal Legend tend to fail because of little hype and reviews that aren't all 9's across the board.

  • The game looks good, and ill probalbly pick this up down the road when it gets cheaper, but there are too many games coming out right now to warrant pircking this up and having to miss out on some other, possibly better title

  • Hey, what did you expect?  It has a lot of competition in the "Yeah, I'm a blatant God of War clone, but what's wrong with that?" genre.  Personally, I've taken a pass on all the GOW clones so as not to dillute my enjoyment of the real thing when it drops in March.

  • Personally, I'm not buying the game because I'm at work.  That's not to rule out the possibility that I'll buy it in the future.

In all seriousness, I think it just got lost in the shuffle.  Darksiders sounds fun, but there are about 37 other games either recently released or about to be released that excite me just as much.

  • I bought it. And I did see commercials for it like every 10 minutes on Tv.

  • Idea though release it for Wii and call it Zelda 1 billion units sold guaranteed.

  • I didn't buy it because Mass Effect 2 stole all of my money.

And, it was *** worth it.

  • I actually bought this game, and it was a letdown. There are other games that deserve your time and money. Such as Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, and all these other upcoming releases

  • I am going to have to agree with most other people. I never saw anything about this game until I saw the review for it. I would like to play it but busy with other games right now.

  • I was a decent game, but I'd call it more of a weekend rental than a purchase.  I bought it, but it's getting traded in toward Bioshock 2 next week.

  • Picking it up this weekend.  Maybe the 'heavy marketing' was only in select regions?  The only advertising I saw for this was what I found myself after learning about it here.

  • That really sucks!! This game is for sure my second favorite game of 2010. I have played, and beat all of these games. Heres my list so far. Also if you did not pick this game up. Just do it!!!!

    1. Mass Effect 2

    2. Darksiders

    3. Bayonetta

    4. Dark Void

    5. Army Of Two The 40th Day

  • It looked good, but not nearly as good as ME2 or other games that are out right now.  Survival of the fittest at its best.
