FFXIII PS2 Cost Square-Enix A Year-And-A-Half

Final Fantasy XIII was not originally destined for this generation of consoles. Yoshinori Kitase, FFXIII’s producer, recently revealed that Square-Enix’s RPG was destined for the PlayStation 2. This version of the game cost the developer a big chunk of development time.

“Final Fantasy XIII was originally meant to be a PS2 title, but we had to switch systems due to the arrival of the PS3,” Kitase said in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine.

"That cost us about one-and-a-half years and was constantly a case of trial and error," Kitase continued. "However, because we worked so hard at the beginning, we got to a cruising speed much faster than anticipated and therefore could start on the translation and international voice recording process at an early stage of the development.

"It’s because of this that we can release both the European as well as the American version barely three months after the Japanese release."

Final Fantasy XIII releases on March 9. With buzz for the game reaching a fever pitch, it’s interesting to think about an alternative history where FFXIII came out in fall of 2008. Would new IPs such as Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge had room to grow if a juggernaut like Final Fantasy had hit at the same time?

  • 1 half years explains the long wait? pishaw

  • EXCUSES!  I just want to play it already.  I'm glad it is on the PS3 though.

  • Ah, that explains it. Hopefully that means that, since they already have experience working with the PS3, XIV won't take as long to hit the market place.

  • 1 1/2 years is a long time for developers, but then, Square Enix has deep pockets.

  • @Andrew: I think they simultaneously worked on the PC and PS3 version of XIV.  In fact, I believe they intended it to be made for the PS3 to begin with.  They have/had two different groups working on those.  Regardless, I have high hopes for XIV.

  • Who cares? It's still gonna be released by March. I was playing other stellar games since its announcement on the 360, an extra 2 more months will be like nothing to me.

Still can't wait to be blown away by March 9

  • I think those IP's would of been about as successful as they were given the genre difference, and the fact neither were huge box office success's.

  • I was wondering why I had to wait such a long

  • Im getting a little excited for this. I was in blockbuster yesterday and saw a trailer for it and it got me a little excited.

  • The only game of all the upcoming releases that I'm totally positive I'm going to get. Can't wait.

  • still not buying this.  not until Square steps up and makes and FF6 or FF7 remake.  they'd make a serious killing on those games and the story/world is already laid out...it wouldn't take "too much" time to update the graphics/sound.

come on Square, what's the deal?

  • I agree with Santini. I want my FF7 for PS3 :(

  • I'm actually glad that they don't try to rush out sequels every year or so. They seem to actually pay attention to details, and even with the missteps with XII, they've always released highly polished, deep games (at least with the main series).

  • @Adam

Square does enough re-releases and remakes. Why would you want more retreads rather than new material?

But rest easy; they've done DS remakes of 3 and 4 and I'm sure 5 and 6 are in the future.

  • Wow. Hope it's good. I'm gonna wait and see. I haven't played a FF game all the way through since 3 (6 to some).

  • Im sure they would make a ton of money if they remade some of the older FF games, but I would assume that the developers would rather create a new epic game and story than refurbish an older one.

Cant wait for March 9. =)

  • thats a cool fun fact.
