Apple Unveils iPad

As rumored for weeks, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad today at an Apple event in San Francisco. Much of the speculation has proven true, as the tablet computer essentially looks like a gigantic iPhone with a 10-inch screen. Significantly smaller and lighter than a laptop computer, it weighs in at 1.5 pounds and is only half an inch thick.

"What this device does is extraordinary. You can browse the web with it. It is the best browsing experience you’ve ever had. It’s phenomenal to see a whole web page right in front of you that you can manipulate with your fingers," Jobs said. "Way better than a laptop, way better than a smartphone…it’s a dream to type on."

Like the iPod and iPhone, the iPad will be available in different sizes - 16, 32, and 64GB. Features are similar to the phone, with Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, speaker, and microphone built in (although it omits the camera). It can run for 10 hours on a fully charged battery, with over a month of standby life. It runs on a 1ghz Apple A4 chip, and every iPhone app and game will be usable with no modifications whatsoever.

Games have been a success on the iPhone, so it's no surprise that they were included in this presentation. EA showed off Need For Speed Shift, complete with accelerometer controls. Also shown was an FPS called Nova, an ESPN snowboarding game, and an MLB game.

The iPad will ship in 60 days (3G models in 90 days), with a price point of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. 3G versions of the iPad will retail for $629, $729, and $829, respectively.

Our own Nick Ahrens is at the event, and he's sent a few images along:

As cool as that looks, it'd be a huge dent in the wallet.  Apple's going too fast for their consumers to catch up.

  • Tablets are great, but very $$$ and of course any Apple product is no exempt from this. It's great they are releasing this product and I bet ibuyers can't wait to be charged for customer service for help with this new one.

  • LOOKS KOO

  • HOLY $$$$! O.O

  • I see this being great for maybe college students, people in the medical profession or e-book readers, but I don't think the average consumer really has a need for it.

  • Looks stupid.

  • Whats the point?  A big fat iPhone with no phone ability?  Am I missing something?  I hope so.

  • Okay, people are going to b*tch so much when this thing gets scratched all to hell like their iPods. Plus, if you want a small computer, why not just get a netbook? They're cheaper and they actually function as a computer. You won't be running many programs that run better than an iPod app on that thing because it's only going to have 16-32GB of storage. If you want to spend that kind of money for something that's really only a novelty, then go ahead, but I have a feeling this thing is not going to be anywhere close to a fully functioning computer.

  • hmmm, I wouldn't know how to use this

  • Looks good to me. Apple has rarely failed me, and I doubt they'll fail me this time.

  • Neat but I don't see it being useful for anyone but Macophiles. More bulky than an iPhone, more expensive than a netbook, and a huge screen just waiting to get cracked.

  • Looks like a giant iPhone.  What happened to real innovation Apple?  Bring back the days of the Mac and Apple II when you actually knew how to capture people's imaginations and made incredible machines that people needed to have.  Sorry to say, but I was never sold on the idea of tablet PCs when I saw the first unveiling of them back in...god...I think 2002?  Eight years later, Apple makes their own tablet PC...good going guys!  Ugh.

  • I predict a lot of buyer's remorse. I'm calling it right now. Someone screencap this.

  • I'd rather stick with my laptop thank you.

  • more crap . ya know they need to stop rushing all this stuff . dont get me wrong i am all for new tech but at the end of the day its realy killing thingssuch as music & human contact . enough already .money dont grow on trees .

  • If I could shoot down Russion and Chinese spy satellites with it, I would buy it for $800 bones.  Otherwise, I might use it if given to me as a door prize...

  • I just cannot gather myself together enough to buy an Apple product. Yes they look good but between price point and my addiction to games the Apple format cannot help me.

  • I predict... $1,199 as the first price point, or more.

As revolutionary as it may be, I think the price vs. actual features are really going to hurt sales. That is, if every consumer actually thinks with the right mind, which we know they don't...

  • 16th!

Boo yah. look at that number

Anyway the prices made me say........0.o i mean for the full price you can buy a ps3 and a naked 360 *naked as in no hardrive*

  • Nevermind! Just saw the prices! Really reasonable actually!
