Like a celebratory processional, the march of Mass Effect 2 onto store shelves has left behind it a wake of glowing review scores. Bioware’s latest sci-fi epic has accrued so many high scores (like ours), that it has already achieved the rank of second highest rated Xbox 360 game ever.

Mass Effect 2’s rise in the ranks is attributable to aggregate review site Metacritic, which currently has the game sitting at an impressive 97/100. Second place is nearly shared, however, as BioShock and The Orange Box currently hold competing scores of 96. Who’s the ruler of the roost? That would be Grand Theft Auto IV at a stunning 98.

Let’s not act completely surprised, here. Bioware has a good run of high-scoring Xbox 360 games on Metacritic. The original Mass Effect is sitting pretty at 94 and Dragon Age: Origins is at a not-too-shabby 86. Bioware is no stranger to creating awesome games.

Could Mass Effect 2 already be 2010’s game of the year? Did you grab your copy?

This game is definitely going to get a nomination for game of the year, but it too early to tell if it is the game of the year. We still have so many promising games to come out. God of War 3, BioShock 2, Final Fantasy 13, Heavy rain, Super Mario Galaxy 2. so who knows.

Game of the year for me will be Red Dead Redemption, but that's me being biased since it's a western themed game. No doubt though that ME2 will be nominated, looks like one of many great games to come out this year.

I don't have much time to play it with all the exams this week, but I will probably pick it up this weekend along with a new tv (so I don't have to play Mass Effect 2 with a purple tint).

it's too early in the year to say it's game of the year. It will be fun at the end of the year though, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, and Super Mario Sunshine 2 among others are all goty contenders I'm sure!

@laxgodGaMeR18: I only have a PS3 as well but MAss Effect is an awesome action RPG and, according to Joystiq, the best action RPG ever.

I'll watch my buddies play it, and be jealous. And they'll be jealous while I play God of War 3. I'll get a 360 again and play this game for sure
