Sony Doesn't Regret Passing Up God Of War II On PS3

What if God of War II would have launched with the PS3? Don’t be surprised if your head begins aching from the possibilities. We recently chatted with Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment’s senior vice president of product development, about the decision to go ahead and release Kratos’s second god-murdering adventure on the PS2 late in the console’s life.

When asked whether he thought God of War II should have been delayed in order to be a PS3 launch game, Yoshida said “We had a lot of debates about it, actually. I always firmly stood by keeping it on PS2. Many people, including marketing, suggested that maybe it should be moved to PS3. What I believed was that God of War II would be the best-selling and best game of the year. We had always seen that, at the launch of a platform, the developer has to spend a lot of time becoming familiar with the platform and software tools. Technical issues take up a lot of the development, perhaps leaving less time for really polishing the game. Towards the end of a platform is when you see really great games, after developers really begin to understand the hardware.

“In the God of War franchise,” he continued, “I saw an opportunity for the Santa Monica team to complete their vision for the second game on a platform they totally understood. That was my argument and the company and team supported it. I’m very happy with the result. So to your question, I have never regretted the fact that we released God of War II on PS2.”

  • I'm not sorry either.  The cutting edge graphics will serve Kratos well.  I want gore, gore, killing, more gore, and lots of badassery (I'll tell Webster's about this word later).

    It's looking good and I can't wait.  Go PS3!

  • Hah, I read it backwards.  I'm glad we have GoW2 on Ps2.  It worked well with the system.  As for GoW3, I'm glad its on the PS3.  Tons of school can do this to a man.  I need rest.  After homework.

  • Am glad they made that decision, as well. I do not quite understand, though. God of War II released after the PS3 already launched. There is no way it could have been a launch title. We probably would not have seen it until sometime in 2008.

  • I agree. It makes sense.

  • I agree also. It was a good decision to release it on the PS2, since then they would have to go in and pretty much re-do the graphics for the game causing it to get delayed, potentially hurting it more then helping.

I don't know but all I know is that they made the right decision and that's all that matters.

  • This is the playstations last hope to redeem itself as a somewhat decent console... if this game screws up, Im throwing my ps3 down the toilet

  • @2pacalypse

Wow considering it had 2 of it's exclusives garner multiple GOTY awards for 2 years in a row I guess it's safe to say you probably don't own a PS3.

  • I think it would be great having God Of War II on PS3

  • this is not anything bad to it so i don't mind their decision

  • I really enjoyed God of War on the PS2, to be honest. If you were really dissatisfied with the sequel on that system, then pick up the GoW Collection for PS3. It's just as fun. ;D

  • I'm sure they don't regret it, considering there was something like 5 million PS3's sold at that time compared to what, 120 million PS2's? It does make sense... well, dollars actually. Anyway, it's fine with me--it was a good game regardless of system.

  • @2pacalypse

by all means, if you decide to chuck a PS3, let me know first!!!

The PS3 is gaining so much momentum that it's crazy. I have no doubt that when it's said and done, the PS3 will have moved more units than the XBox 360 and the Wii.

  • That seems like a very smart decision. Plus, It would have sold horrible on PS3 because not that many people bought it at the time.

  • Thank God. GOW2 was *** near perfect.

  • it makes sense on ps2 cus of the install base...3 made sense on ps3 like halo3 on x360..

  • Releasing it on PS3 would have been the worst business decision of all time.  Not only would they not have sold nearly as many, but it would also be considerably more expensive to make.  That would have been a double whammy of bad business sense.

  • Personnaly, I agree with Shuhei.  After all, he was just trying to keep Kratos from getting stuck on geometry.

  • I was not upset about this either. Although, I did play it on my PS3!  Can't wait for God of War 3 on March 16th!

  • I think if GOW 2 was on the PS3 i think it would of sold a lot more PS3's that year. But it made sense plus it would of took a while to make the game on Blu-Ray and that mean we wouldn't of seen GOW 3 on the PS3 till 2011 or 2012 (maybe).

  • If it came out of PS3 lots of people wouldnt have had a PS3 to play it on anyway, good decision to release it on PS2.
