Star Trek Online Beta Patched

by Matt Miller on Jan 21, 2010 at 11:15 AM

The beta version of Star Trek Online continues to boldly go in some new directions with a huge new patch.

Players of the new Star Trek Online beta have had some pretty severe restrictions placed on them for these first several days of exploration, including a level cap of 16 that effectively halted forward progression. That's all changed now, due to a mammoth new patch that went live yesterday.

The full level progression up to Admiral is now open, allowing devoted players to unlock the best starships in the game. In addition, the Cardassian and Romulan sectors of space have unlocked, dramatically expanding the "world" of the game.

But what's the coolest new feature? Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, now introduces each new sector block as you enter with a audio journal overview of that area of the galaxy.

The patch also fixes any number of bugs that previously hampered the game experience. Our favorite bug you won't see anymore? Bridge officers equipped with a tribble used to endlessly pet the creatures, and the furry little guys would grow larger and larger until they filled the screen. Totally didn't cause a wipe on one of our recent missions.

If you're hoping to play sometime soon, make sure and start your launcher early. The patch is large, and the download was extremely sluggish as of last night.
