New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sales Eclipse Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy was, and is, an incredible game. Mario’s galactic adventure is immediately mentioned in any discussion of the best Wii titles. Despite the game’s two year head start on New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the title has already been surpassed in sales by Nintendo’s new 2D title.

In a report by IGN, Super Mario Galaxy sold 4.1 million copies since its release in 2007. An impressive number, but it starts to look a little less stellar when you consider the 4.2 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii that have been sold since December 2009.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii did not fare quite as well as Galaxy critically. Mario’s latest co-op outing receiving a 9.25 from Game Informer, and currently holds an 87 on Metacritic. Galaxy received a 9.75 from Game Informer and has held on to an astounding 97 on Metacritic.

With New Super Mario Bros. Wii already doing so well on the market, it makes my mind spin just thinking about how it will do within the next two years. Will Mario Galaxy 2 show equally impressive numbers?
