Media Consumption Way Up For 8- 18-Year-Olds From 5 Years Ago

As you read this article, at this very moment you could very well be contributing to a statistic. That statistic is that 8-18 year-olds dedicate 7 hours and 38 minutes to media consumption in an average day. Recent survey research shows that this a dramatic increase compared to five years ago, when people in that age range spent an average of 6 hours and 21 minutes with media such as video games. Cutting to the chase, let's see what's up with whippersnappers these days and their video games.

  • Only 30 percent of 8-18 year-olds say their parents limit their video game playing time
  • 50 percent have a video game console in their bedroom
  • 1 hour and 13 minutes of video games are played on average per day since 2005, up 24 minutes from 2004
  • Boys play 56 minutes a day playing console games, compared to girls at 14 minutes
  • Boys play 25 minutes a day playing computer games, compared to girls at 8 minutes

The Kaiser Family Foundation’s third large-scale survey, the largest publicly accessible source of media use-related research, points to mobile media as the leading catalyst for increased media consumption. iPhones, iPods, cell phones, and other handheld devices are have found their way into more kids’ pockets. I'm almost disappointed that video games were the leading cause for the increase.

  • 24hrs a day HA

  • but seriously maybe 5 a week

  • @ least 2 hours a day

  • Tim, please go back and correct the grammar in this article. Are you asking how much time I spend playing games? If so about two hours a week, I have a job now that I am an adult. But honestly when I was young I played about as much as these figures reflect.

  • you should be able to spend as much time as you want, where i come from there is a sayin, and it goes a little like this"those that do what they want in life, death tastes like chocolate"

  • Depends if I have college that day.  I only have college tuesdays and thursdays, so on those days, probably an hour if even.  All other days, 3-6hrs assuming I don't have a massive programming project.

But who cares, more technology means more time it will be used.  Least that's my opinion.  The better the system and games, the more it's played.

  • this is just because people cant afford to go out anymore.

  • 3 hours a day....at least!

  • i spend some time.. depending on the day... i prefer game sessions over 30 min here and there...

  • i used to play 2 + hours a day but lately i go on and just talk to friends but im getting back into COD4

  • Wow, thats scary. I can't imagine watching tv for four hours, I can barely get through shows that are longer than 15 minutes long because adult swim has ruined my attention span. I do spend around 3 or 4 hrs a day gaming but I'm 23 years old, I didn't do that when I was 8 years old. I didn't even have a system until I was 13 or 14. Go outside and play you *** kids! Don't hang out, play!

  • Sad how it gets longer as you move to screen media. I know it's probably because some people don't watch any movies, but how only 25 minutes of movies. A normal movie is over an hour long!

Me? I'd say half an hour on the computer, 2 hours of TV, hour and a half of video games on weekdays (3 hours on weekends), 20 minutes on music, and 1 hour on print. The movie thing I only do on weekends. So I'm probably a little over half average.

  • I've been playing games less and less now because I've been playing a little too much recently so now about 3-4 hours a week. Although I do a lot of the other things on the list. I wouldn't necessarily say this could be called "bad" though. The computer could be used for many different things other than games, and I listen to music daily because sometimes when I'm doing an activity I like having music in the background.

  • Am I slow or is there a mismatch from the article to the chart?

    Article: 7 hrs. 38 min.

    Chart: 10 hrs. 45 min.

Help me out here.  What am I missing?

  • Haha I am an exception to the rule since I am a stay at home Dad... but I think I easily spend 6 hours playing video games a day. Plus I'm also not between the ages of 8-18

  • Wow. I'm almost twenty and I -just- got a television in my room for the first time over the holiday. Even then, I had to buy it myself. However, I totally blow that figure for time spend on console games out of the freaking water. I might not play every day, but when I do, it's srs bsns.

  • See thats why they made the Wii!!

    :D

But this is interesting i only watch tv when im going too bed or when 24 is on.

  • @ least 2 and a half a day

  • It really varies. I don't play video games every day, but when I do I spend at least 2 or 3 hours. I probably spend an average of 9 or 10 hours a week gaming.

  • I recently worked with some middle schoolers and I was really surprised how many had iPods and cellphones.  Definitly alot different than when I went to school.

On a average weekday, I get in 1-2 hours but more on the weekend.
