Sony Motion Controller To Be Named "Arc?"

Two of the biggest launches hitting the video game industry in 2010 are Microsoft and Sony’s motion control technology. Xbox fans have had the name Project Natal to cling on to for some time, while PS3 users have had their mysterious, glowing wand remain unnamed. Allegedly, that has changed.

According to a source trusted by VG247, the name for the motion controller is “Arc.” Sony will be unveiling the its motion control wand, complete with its official name, later this year. Previous claims by Kaz Hirai point to a possible release window of March.

Sony has refused to comment on the rumor as of yet, but at least we have something to refer to the doodad as. We’ll bring you more news on this as it develops.

What do you think of Sony’s supposed name for their motion controller?

  • "Arc", huh?  does that mean it too will eventually end up buried and forgotten?  lol...

  • interesting name... indeed

  • kinda cool. its not really "arc"ed though, it it?

  • This is the first I've actually seen the remote.  Is that really a glowing ball on the end?

Arc is a pretty dumb name.  At least Natal has a more mysterious and original name to it.

  • I wonder why they went with "Arc". I mean, seriously. Why don't they just call it the "Waggler"? It would be just as nonsensical. :)

  • I don't really mind the name personally.

I just hope they change the look of the wand before its release. Right now, it just looks like a very ugly Wii remote...

  • "Arc" is an interesting name for the PS3 Motion control. I at least prefer this name over the "Wii" name.

  • Didn't the motion control bandwagon take off a while back? Nintendo proved it could be done good (Twilight Princess, Wii Sports) and shown it can be done bad (every other Wii game). What's the point in Sony jumping onto the bandwagon now? At least with Natal it's not some wand you're waving around, and won't be used to play all the games.

  • like the one of the covenant, or the lad?

  • Oh my God...Playstaion Play w/ remote is coming

  • im sure its going to make lots of games as hard to develop for as the WII's controllers did, lets face it, its a gimmick that takes away from content and replaces it w/ wavin ur arms around like a fool and makes it so ur arms get too tired to get a good game session in

  • All Rotation Controller?

I guess I can start to like the name after a few months of hearing it.

  • Uh at least it isn't motion controller.

  • At least it has a name now instead of us calling it the sony motion controller.  That being said, still don't see the appeal for a PS3 owner.

  • lol. At least its not named "The Jewel" lol.

  • Kinda lame name for all the hype...and the guy holding it looks like he's taking a class at Hogwarts...

  • No, I'm almost positive that's really a roll-on deodorant.

  • No, I'm almost positive that's really a roll-on deodorant.

  • I'm still not sold on the motion control gimmicks (and I even bought a Wii, although it was technically a gift for my girlfriend). I will say, though, that there have been some semi-decent attempts at motion control games on the Wii that, in my opinion, weren't well received because of the platform and its audience (House of the Dead: Overkill; Red Steel) and that Nintendo has shown that, when they aren't overused or over-gimmicky they can really add to the gameplay (New Super Mario Bros. propeller helmets for example).

There are also games that are already making frivolous use of the motion control already built into the DualShock 3 controllers (has anyone played the demo for Folklore where you have to do the ridiculous jerking motion with your controller to collect the essences of defeated enemies, when a flick of the D-pad, joystick, or press of any button would be just as effective and less stressful on the wrists?)

So, yeah. I've no doubt that a ton of crappy games will come out trying to make use of the motion control in a gimmicky manner. But we could also see a few games that really stretch the limits of what the technology can add to the game experience.

I'm a cynic by nature, so I expect a lot of crap. But there may also end up being a few diamonds in the rough. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Either way, it isn't like traditionally controlled games will cease to be produced for PS3, or like anyone will force us to buy the gimmicky controller or any games designed for use with it.
