Cryptic Was Not Prepared for Star Trek Online Beta Turnout

by Tim Turi on Jan 19, 2010 at 06:28 AM

Have you been attempting to explore the vast reaches of space via the Star Trek Online beta that opened last week? If you’ve been experiencing problems with getting the engines running, you’re not alone. Cryptic reports that they were not expecting such a strong turnout, and they’re wondering “Where the heck did you all come from!?!”

According to a recent update on the Star Trek Online website, Cryptic only expected about 65 percent of the open beta codes to be redeemed. They only expected about 1/6 of the users that redeemed those codes to be playing the game at the same time.

Cryptic said “The actual numbers crushed our predictions.”

“So, we tore apart our logs and began doing a lot of extra optimization work even while we stumbled upon some truly bizarre crashes that can only appear with this sort of load,” Crytic explained.

It turns out that way more people are interested in a Star Trek MMO than even the creators of the game thought. I suppose that’s a problem you want to have!
