Freedom Force’s Man-Bot: Time-Lapse Sketch

Man-Bot… the very name inspires awe in gamers around the world. Well, maybe not, but the character from Irrational Games’ Freedom Force is a fan favorite, and you can watch his creation from beginning to end in this time-lapse video.

During our visit to Irrational’s Boston studio, artist Robb Waters (who designed most of Freedom Force’s outlandish superhero cast) was kind enough to sit down and draw Man-Bot from scratch in front of the camera. You can check out the sped-up results in the video below, where you’ll get and exclusive look at how this unique character takes shape.

Be sure to check out our Irrational Hub in the coming weeks for even more exclusive features about the studio and its games. In the meantime, you should head over to the new irrationalgames.com for insight and commentary from the developers themselves.

  • I should probably get FF so I can bask in all of Irrational's glory. And System Shock 2, but my PC probably couldn't handle it.

  • If you did a time lapse of me trying to draw anything you'd see 3 straight minutes of me scratching my head, smoking cigarettes, picking my nose, probably a long and defeated sigh, tossing some playing cards into a hat on the floor across the room, and a long, vacant stare of disgust into the camera. In the end it'd just be a stickman in a top hat and no pants.

  • That was pretty neat.. but about halfway through I realized it was stressing me out.

  • Freedom Force was totally missing from the top 200 (oh, and DDR too, that one was kind of a bigger gamer revolution than many games that made the list).

  • Man-Bot; Because Bot-Man is soooo overrated.

  • I hear great things about System Shock 2, but it needs to be updated so it runs on a newer Windows platform.  Not to mention a re-release.  Maybe an updated version?  That would be spectacular.

  • @Dead-erSpace:  It's Man-Bot because he was a human who decided later to become a robot, whereas Bot-Man was a robot that was built to be a humanoid.  The two are completely different!

  • a six and a half minute video, and that was sped up... no wonder my drawings don't ever look great. I spend about six and a half minutes on drawing from start to finish...

  • cool.  looks like a superhero farce game.  awesome.

  • That was awesome

  • Awesome. I wish I had an awesome tablet like that, or any tablet at all :S

This might be the first video I ever download from this site.

  • I like these time lapse sketches a lot.

  • Want...tablet...

  • It's not just a tablet. It's a Wacom Cintiq, an awesome piece of kit.

Now, where are my old FF cds.

  • i wish i could go back and play those games

  • I prefered Tombstone, but I don't think that he was on the first one.

  • Sweet.

  • old school retro...
