Nintendo: DSi XL ‘Not Just For Old People’

Nintendo loves churning out new iterations of their handheld devices. It’s questionable whether or not we’ll see an HD Wii, but what we might get is the umpteenth version of the DS. The company stands by their new jumbo DS’s far-reaching impact, insisting the bigger screen and stylus aren’t just for geriatrics.

"It's absolutely not [just for old people]. DSi XL appeals to as many people, if not more, than its predecessors,” said James Honeywell, DS product manager in an interview with CVG.

"With bigger screens and a larger pen-like stylus it's likely that older users may find the DSi XL easier and more comfortable to use but there are many more people it can and will appeal to,” he continued. Gamers will undoubtedly appreciate the bigger screens so they can experience their favorite and the latest DS titles bigger and in a greater level of detail than ever before.

"We certainly know that a lot of families who play DS together will enjoy the wider viewing angle the DSi XL allows so they can play together at home and the fact the bigger stylus is less likely to get lost down the back of the sofa is another bonus for them."

Anybody else think that the DSi XL is a significant enough upgrade to the DS Lite and DSi to merit a purchase? What do you think about sacrificing portability for a less awkward stylus and Zelda: Spirit Tracks on a bigger screen?

  • id maybe care if i hadnt already got a dsi.

  • Still hasn't convinced me. I already have a DSi, so getting a bigger one is just a waste of money in my opinion.

  • Well think about it, in technology, particularly with TV's, people love big screens, that are slightly thinner than their last model.  You see more, and it fits comfortably against your wall.

With the DS, I see the same thing.  Bigger screens, still thin = happy consumers.  It's both aesthetically pleasing, and makes sense for playing games.  My hesitation comes from price, as I can't justify dropping that much when I already have a perfectly fine DS Lite at home.

  • I have a DSi. For me, when choosing a hand-held...portability is a key factor. The DSi XL is just unnecessary when comparing to a DSi or DSLite.

  • My DS Lite is pretty rickety... if I felt the need to upgrade and hand my old one off to my wife or someone, yeah, I might spend a little extra on the XL. I think I'd probably want to hold one before I decided, though, and compare it to the DSi regular.

  • I'm not getting an extra large DS just because I'm old.  I'm twenty four, ahem.  I'm getting it because the screens are GINORMOUS.

  • If my current DS Lite breaks, I'm all for a bigger screen.  Agree with Gregory Reed though, will need to hold one in my hands first to see if its still comfortable to hold.

  • Yeah, but I already have a DSi, so I'm definitely not gonna get this.

  • when's the next ds coming out?

  • Yah you should get all the things

  • I'd rather see a DS Game adapter for the Wii

  • The Nintendo products are OK. Still have a Super Nintendo with some classic games like Super Mario All Stars and Donkey Kong.

  • It's just for old people.

  • I don't think a lot of people are going to be buying the DSi XL(possibly set to be priced at $220) just for a bigger screen and stylus. The DSi($170) is just a tiny bit smaller than the XL, and $50 cheaper. So DSi will probably be more popular among people in America, considering this "economic slump" we're in.

  • I can see the appeal easily, my mom and dad can't see the current screen without getting a bit of a headache because of its size (not that they would buy a an XL, but that's not the point). I am quite alright with my DSi and I myself do not see it as an upgrade but I understand why its going to be a huge enough market that they made it.

  • DS, sheeemes....

I only have the PSP 3000 and I barely use handhelds thank you very much....

  • Why get a bigger screen if you got a DSi, please Nintendo stop giving us a new DS every few months.

  • Still on an original DS.  I would gladly try to get my hands on this if they'd put the GBA slot back in.

  • Unfortunately, this device IS only for old people, and it always will be.

  • Well, on my ds i mainly play remakes of classic games, so im just gonna stick to my ds lite so i can play final fantasy 6 on it (still waiting for a ds release)
