Risk Marching Onto XBLA In Early 2010

by Jeff Cork on Jan 12, 2010 at 06:00 AM

Hasbro’s classic board game Risk is heading to Xbox Live Arcade in early 2010, according to Electronic Arts. Risk: Factions won’t fold into the Hasbro Family Game Night package, so players who tire of spelling words in Boggle and want to spend the rest of the evening taking over the world will have to launch Risk as a standalone game. Of course, the regular game can take hours to complete, so it’s not as though Risk lends itself as easily to drop-in/drop-out play as games like Yahtzee or Battleship do.

“For the past half-century, millions of RISK fans have been consumed with ruling the world, underscoring the board game’s enduring appeal,” says Chip Lange, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA’s Hasbro Division.  “We’re now going to bring that masterpiece experience to life and add other amazing layers of XBLA-style gameplay that will take conquests to a new level, including the ability to battle players from around the globe for the first time, truly giving new meaning to the phrase ‘world domination.’”

The game is being developed by Stainless Games, which previously flexed their adaptation skills on the Xbox Live Arcade version of Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers. Risk: Factions includes some tweaks to the Risk formula, including having five different factions with varying strengths, animated combat missions and “kooky humor.”
