Netflix Coming To A Wii Near You?

The Xbox 360 kicked things off for home console compatibility with Netflix, then the PS3 joined the party via Netflix launch disc. Though the Wii can't play regular Netflix DVDs, will it finally get a chance to stream movies from the video rental giant's collection? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says the service will eventually be available on all consoles.

In an interview with All Things Digital during CES 2010 in Vegas last week, Hastings said the chances of Netflix getting on a Nintendo console are excellent. In July Netflix hired John Funge, who previously held a lead research position with a company that helped create Wii MotionPlus and other Wii development tools. Funge is now head of Netflix's game platforms division so the Wii may very well be next in line for instant streaming.

  • its about time

  • If this does happen, watch it be something like "Netflix Jr."  where most of the stuff you rent has a G rating, because its a "family console."

  • oh, and my first FIRST!

  • This would be awesome since my xbox sounds louder than a Metro Bus when I am trying to watch a video at a lower volume.  Does anyone know how to make and Xbox 360 run quieter?  Also, what is Wii going to do to compensate for the 360 and PS3's ability to stream HD video?... Is this a clue for what's to come?

  • Considering that many people who have a wii do not have any other console, this is probably a good move if they want to expand the reach of the service. I keep crossing my fingers the selection of streaming movies gets better -- right now it resembles the bottom of the DVD bin at a gas station.

  • hmm, could be interesting.

  • @Femmfat

I read an article (sorry, no link) about how Netflix is signing deals with the studios that gives access to new movies after a month from when they hit the DVD stand, this is to make people buy new DVD's and save Netflix money so they can invest in the streaming service a lot more.  We should start to see a much better and bigger streaming service from Netflix sooner rather than later.

  • They should make it so the wii can play dvds.

  • derreck is rigth. it migth as well be g rated movies with pg-13 and r movies getting few views. or they could be movies from video tapes.

  • @Conner: The Wii can play DVDs. It just does a crappy job of it.

I don't know about anyone else, but I get some noticeable lag streaming Netflix on my 360. I don't even want to think about how bad it would be on a Wii.

  • still doesn't improve the game quality.

  • No fair! That's the 360's (although I'm not sure about the PS3) and NOT the Wii's! Ha, just kidding!

  • I use ps3 already, but this is really cool. And Playon sucks horribly by the way.

  • Thats nice to know.

  • I agree with Derreck. Haha, nice observation!

  • Thanks for the compliments guys!

When Nintendo burns that Wii stereotype into everyone's minds, you can't help but see how predictable they have become.

  • Seems pretty cool, and Wii is not meant for "HI GRAPHICS" its a Familiy console wtih fun games, not HI DEFEINITION.

  • nice

  • Wow. Netflix is a console ***.... meh I'd prefer to use Netflix on my computer if i had it.

  • People who only have Wiis probably don't even care about Netflix.
