EA Pulling Online Plug On Some Games This February

Fans of older sports games, take note: Your days may be numbered. EA has announced a list of games that it plans to discontinue online service for starting February 2. Some of the casualties include games from a few years back that have received subsequent updates, such as NBA 07, Madden 07 or the PlayStation 2 version of Fight Night Round 3. One of the oddball inclusions is Facebreaker, the company's would-be answer to Punch-Out!!. It was a sales dud on shelves, but the game was added to the Xbox Marketplace's Games on Demand service just last month. If you planned on playing it online, you'd better get a move on.

Here's the list of games that will be unplayable online at the beginning of next month:

UEFA Champions League 07 PC and x360
Facebreaker x360 and PS3
Fantasy Football 09 x360 and PS3

  • thats wack ! i understand alot of people are not playing those games anymore , but what if you want to go back and pop madden 09 in for some odd reason ? thats dumb & they should leave it up because people once spent 65 dollars on some of those games ! They realy need to stop doing things like that !

  • Thats why I'm not a big fan of online specific achievements/trophies.

  • Madden 09? Really? Kinda Janky! That's only a year old gamd!

Well it's not like they are cutting it on an online system. Wii and Xbox 1 are dead rungs for online games (unless it's Halo 2)...

  • @ Bustin Buzzella

The article also lists Madden 09 x360 and PS3. Its second to last.

It kind of sucks that they are going to shut down 09. Does that mean they are going to stop support of Madden '10 this time next year? If so then this must be some lame tactic to force people to buy the next years edition.

  • I don't buy Madden every single year, it just gets too expensive to play the same game that is updated in small ways.  I have Madden 09 and don't plan to buy Madden again for quite some time, so to loose my online playability feels very unfair to me.  It's like they want to force me to keep buying the same game year after year when I don't have the money for it.

  • Color me shocked and amazed.

People don't play those anymore and the sports title life span is considerably less than that of any other genre. Madden 09 trades in for half price 6 months after release, then spikes right before the next iteration to fall a couple of days after. EA is just taking down the things that prove to be a money sink - why run the servers for games no one plays - I mean, they need all that server space for distributing down loadable content that brings them 5 times the money in twice the time. Besides, it's EA - people bow to them based on brand like they were Louis Vuitton.  Want EA to stop making stupid moves - stop buying EA until they listen.

  • They all make sense except the '09 games. That doesn't seem right.

  • None of these surprise me except for the decision to cut support for '09. Is this some underhanded way to get gamers to shell out for the current edition?

  • I understand that they can't afford to keep servers up for all of the online games they put out indefinitely. Especially without a subscription service to support it. But it would be nice to have a (minimum) three year cushion for disabling online support of these sports titles.

If you are still playing an '06 sport title in 2010, then you probably shouldn't expect to be able to continue competitive online play. But they could really extend the saleability of those older titles by keeping the online support active. I mean, who among the holdouts is going to buy a discounted copy of Madden '09 now that they can't play their buddy online? Or a copy of '10 knowing that online play will be disabled in a years time? I think this is going to result in a WHOLE bunch of unsold copies languishing on store shelves and eventually being returned to EA for a loss, whereas they could extend the viability of selling those old titles by simply continuing to offer online play for another year or two (and possibly get some folks "hooked" after picking up a discounted or used bin title, who will then buy the new versions when they come out.)

So, yeah...  seems like they might be shooting themselves in the foot with this one. Although, like I said, I understand the general belt tightening. Things are tough all over and that is a lot of server real estate. But you shouldn't do that at the cost of customer goodwill.

  • phew, good nothing I play is on there.

  • I can't even play anything on there. I don't really care

  • Madden '09 for 360 and the PS3...that is CHEAP!  EA sucks!

  • Wow, that's just dumb. I feel bad for all those people who have these games and truly enjoy them.

  • just goes to show how ea is out to make a buck and screw their fan base in newer ways

  • hmmmm...........

  • they hold the right to...but man that is a nasty thing to do,they do it so you are forced to get next years addition in order to go online...excuse me uugh! i threw up again, sorry you wll have to excuse me cause this is the type of thing that can not go unnoticed.i'am happy you guys at GI printed this so people can see how big monopolizing monster company like Ea wanna eat us out of our wealth.PC doesn't do this to their gamers.if you bought starcarft in the 90's and still have it, you can still play it online and thats like two decades old.does anybody see what iam talking about.i hope gamers as consumers become enlighten by Jeff Cork's new update to the world about EA little sleight of hand.***!i hope next time visual concepts get the nfl rights...you can still play nfl2k5 with current roster on xbox live, huh!ain't that something.

  • does anybody know when EA NFL license runs up!?please answer it'd be highly appreciated

  • You mean I can't play Nascar '08 on my PS2 anymore!?

Seriously, it does make sense, except for the '09 sports games.

  • who's still playing ps2 online?
