Sony Says Their Motion Control Is Much Better Than The Rest

by Tim Turi on Dec 16, 2009 at 06:00 AM

2010 is shaping up to be a big year for video game immersion. With Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s own motion-controller set to release next year, inevitable comparisons are going to be made. Sony’s head of PlayStation marketing, John Koller, is already coming out swinging.

"In terms of the best types of games, I'd say that right now we're looking at a real wide variety of genres that can utilize the technology," Koller explained when asked by GamePro what game types would benefit from PS3’s motion control.

"I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooter and sports games,” Koller continues. “Those are going to be the areas that will really define success because they're areas that, quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching from a differentiation standpoint.

"We look at motion control as being that much more than what exists on the market. The Holy Grail of gaming is placing you as a consumer into the game physically. When we provide further details, people will see exactly where we're going."

On an unrelated note, Koller also asserts that PSN will be beefed up next year in order to better support the digitally-reliant PSP Go.

What do you think about Sony following suit with Nintendo and striving for a more family-oriented gaming initiative in addition to the other genres? Will as many gamers cry foul at Sony for “abandoning the hardcore,” or do you think the PlayStation 3 will continue to appease traditional gamers that are already attached to the system?
