EA Already Talking Dante’s Inferno Sequel

In the gaming industry commercial success almost always dictates a sequel – whether or not the narrative woven in the first title warrants one. So it may not come as a surprise that those behind Dante’s Inferno are already talking about a second iteration, well before the first even hits retail.

Chatting with Inferno’s executive producer Jonathan Knight, G4 questioned the probability of a sequel.

“This [speaking on polishing Dante's Inferno] is just totally what our focus is,” Knight told G4, “and then we're gonna [finish] around the holidays and then everybody's gonna take a long break and we're gonna see if people respond well to it in February -- which I think they will.”

While there is obviously more source material to draw from – Dante’s Inferno being the first act of three that encompass the Divine Comedy – we’re not sure that the tale of Purgatorio lends itself to Inferno’s frantic action. Knight seems to recognize the obstacle.

“That is a problem I hope to have to solve by earning the right to do a follow up,” said Knight.

It’s obvious that Knight is excited by the challenge, and hopeful that sales will allow Visceral Games to move forward with the second act. But is a follow-up feasible? Visceral hasn’t been afraid to take creative liberties, as evidenced by their take on the Inferno. But does the Mount of Purgatory boast enough action and intrigue? Can the terraces of Purgatory play host to such brutal gameplay?

  • Hubris at its best. Its nice to be confident, but their is a point where you cross into hubris. When does the game even come out?

  • I hope they follow the poem. This is one epic journey.

  • That certainly was fast hopefully the first game will sell enough to Warrant it.

  • the material in the rest of the poem wouldn't make a good game so i think they should use some aspects from the poems and make up the rest.

  • I played the demo and tried to like it.  Just feels like a GOW rip off.

Does anyone else feel the same?

  • I would like to ask this question to some of you guys in particular the editors.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with being influenced by a game but this game in terms of, well everything, is a reskined version of God of War 2. It literally took everything thing from that game from the combat, to the quick time events, to the freaking circle appearing over your enemies head, to the glowing chests.

My question is don't you guys think that this game would have been better coming out in November rather than so close to God of War 3?

  • I'm with you heath, this and darksiders look and feel like a GOW3 rip off. This is y I'm skipping them. I'll stick to my GOW collection and Whit Knight Chronicles when it comes out on 2/1/2010

  • I was suprised to hear about a action game crafted from such source material in hell let alone purgatoria. Who knows they may suprise us

  • I definitely enjoyed the demo. The only complaint I really have is that they seemed to copy a lot of the material from God of War and paste it into their game. Still fun, nonetheless.

  • this game is going to suck ! after playing the demo i realy do not care.

  • The gameplay style may be a ripoff of God of War, but maybe there's something to this story and its delivery that makes it unique. Using a similar mechanic that works isn't a sin as long as there's more to the game than just a hack 'n' slash. I may be wrong, but either way I find God of War to be king as it is and anyone following in its footsteps is merely honoring it, not stealing its thunder

  • To someone who's familiar with all three poems, I'm not sure how you could make an action game out of the next two. It's a rather big hurdle that needs to be cleared, but if anyone can do it, I'm sure Visceral can.

  • ooo maybe a Lord of the Flies squad based shooter? *crosses fingers*

  • Hopefully this game doesnt get boycotted for being religious and stuff.

I can only hope it wont end up like the Mass Effect thing.Sexbox 360!

  • I don't think they should even think about a sequel until the game at least hits the shelves.

  • I hate to say it but this game is truly just a rip off of God of War. Not only does it impose a well known mythology onto an action game, or the timing of the gameplay identical, even the mechanics of the game are the same: holding down triangle to launch yourself and enemies into the air (it even with a split second slo-mo as you do it), I mean this is purely God of War with a scythe.

  • they sound very confident in what they are doing. I hope that it does not go to their heads.

  • Eh, I can see a sequel having some potential, but they'd definately have to take a ton of creative liberty with that one XD. Not that I'd really mind since I liked the direction they're taking already. Still, it seems WAY to early to even be considering a sequel.

  • it's definitely a God of War ripoff, but honestly, if you're gonna rip a game off it might as well be a *** good one.  i can't wait for this game.

  • wow so much hate, weve had to wait years for another GOW and I love GOW, bt dante's looks nice even if it is a rip off I'll take all the close to GOW action I can get. Besides whats funner than killing demons all day long
