Spec Ops: The Line Trailer Involves Guns And Sand

by Tim Turi on Dec 14, 2009 at 07:37 AM

Desert warfare has been raging on throughout the annals of history. Stamina-draining treks across sand dunes and inhospitable, sun-baked environments have been the theater for gritty combat for thousands of years, However, not until 2K Games' Spec Ops: The Line has such an important geographical element of strife in the Middle East been realized. This new shooter combines sandstorms with bulletstorms, and the trailer we've got shows off some impressive tech.

In case you're thinking the name Spec Ops is just more-than-convenient-timing on the part of 2K to cash-in on the cooperative mode in Modern Warfare 2, think again. 2K's Spec Ops is actually a series which started as an FPS on PC back in 1996, which then made a run on PlayStation. For the most part those games were juggled between developers Zombie Studios (Saw, Rogue Warrior) and Runecraft (Monopoly Party), with studio Yager (know for their game of the same name) taking over the newest entry.

“Spec Ops: The Line is the epitome of a 2K Games title and incorporates all of our gameplay values: immersive experiences that draw you in, unique and innovative features that make you rethink the way you play them, and an amazingly high quality bar that is synonymous with the 2K name," said president of 2K, Christoph Hartmann. "By meeting these core values, I’m confident that Spec Ops: The Line will be a great experience that people will enjoy playing for years to come."

Spec Ops follows an elite Delta Force squad sent into the sand-drowned city of Dubai in search of the lost Colonel Konrad. The game will feature single-player and multiplayer modes, but details remain scarce at this time.

It's great to see a unique looking shooter appear on the horizon, but I can't help but wonder if the Spec Ops franchise has much name-recognition anymore. Do any of you remember those games? Anybody wondering why they didn't just call it something else?
