Sony CEO Says PlayStation NPD Numbers Exceed Expectations

by Tim Turi on Dec 10, 2009 at 02:10 PM

November's NPD numbers are in and the internet is buzzing with activity over surprises like the Wii's reclamation of supremacy and Xbox 360 console sales slipping past PlayStation 3. Sony Computer Entertainment of America's CEO, Jack Tretton, is sharing in the excitement. He's issued a statement in which he suggests PlayStation sales will be so strong that you might see empty space on the shelves where Sony products should be.

“In November, PS3 was the only hardware console to see any growth when compared to last November, experiencing an 88% lift and a 122% increase from the previous month. Metacritic also unveiled this week its 2009 Game Platform Power Rankings, in which PS3 titles topped the charts on overall game quality, tallying up five of the top ten best reviewed games in 2009 and with UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves taking best reviewed game of the year," Tretton said.

For the record, there were 819,500 Xbox 360s sold last month compared to 710,400 PS3s. It's also interesting to note that despite Uncharted 2's dominating review scores, it stands as one of the titles that has been bumped completely off the top ten bestselling games of November. Tretton turns his attention from a successful November and goes on to highlight his optimism for Sony in the coming holidays.

"The sheer appetite and interest in the PS3 this holiday has been overwhelming and is exceeding our expectations," he continues. "So much so, some retailers are expected to experience tight supply this December. There's no question the holidays are looking very bright for PlayStation and we’re confident that the new year is on pace for the same with hugely anticipated titles hitting the platform, such as MAG, God of War III, BioShock 2, and Final Fantasy XIII.”

If Tretton's talk of Sony's recent success has you wistfully recalling the manufacturer's 15-year-old PSone, check out the latest episode of the Game Informer Show podcast in which we reflect on the PS3's oldest brother.
