Miyamoto On Nintendo’s Stylized Graphics

by Tim Turi on Dec 10, 2009 at 07:47 AM

Looking at New Super Mario Bros. Wii and even two-year-old Super Mario Galaxy, it’s clear that Nintendo knows how to create beautiful looking games on modestly powered consoles. Ever wonder why the company has stuck to bright, vibrant colors and stylish character design instead of honing in on realism? Shigeru Miyamoto has your answer.

Responding to a question from the BBC regarding the stylized-versus-realistic flair of Nintendo games, Miyamoto said, “Our company makes games of several different styles but we always try to be different, whether it's video game or animations there are always trends.”

“For example,” Miyamoto explains, “in the video games industry, it seems that the majority of companies are heading in the same direction, taking advantage of identical technologies. They are simply trying to be better than their rivals. But my idea is pretty different. We try to be unique and different and try not to depend on the techniques of others. We try to be as uniquely creative as possible, and that's got to have played a part in making our games look different.”

Sure, super-realistic Super Mario doesn’t make much sense, but are there any Nintendo series that you would like to see take a grittier turn?
