The lights are on
Sony’s latest update for the PS3 is an optional one, but it incorporates some of the most useful augments to the system yet. PS3-to-PS3 data transfer and the ability to play the PSPgo-based Minis on the console are the highlights. For those who’ve purchased a second PS3 for their home or simply upgraded to the streamlined PS3 Slim, the option to transfer data should come as a relief. By connecting the systems with a LAN cable, a couple quick shuffles along the XMB will result in all your games, movies, and system data being transplanted to the new system and deleted from the old one. Pretty nifty.Update 3.15 also enables “minis” enthusiasts to play the casual, fun-sized games on the PS3. You’ll be able to play games like Stand O Food and Zombie Tycoon on both your PSP and PS3. Anyone who has already downloaded a whole slew of minis for their PSP can simply download the same game for your PS3.A pretty substantial little update. I hope that Sony incorporates more sparklies into the XMB soon, though. I’m finding myself becoming distracted by other shiny objects, and the PS3 must compensate.Speaking of the minis, has anyone played any that they’ve really enjoyed?[Via PlayStation Blog]

Cross-game chat? When is that coming?
the data transfer seem's pretty good.i don't know about the mini's.
Yeah, I want to be able to talk to my friend when he's doing Modern Warfare 2, while still staying on Uncharted 2.
@ FetusEater
i want cross-game chat too. GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT SONY AND STOP BEATING AROUND THE BUSH!
Well, guys, I think this move was to support those who upgraded to the slim. I think that if they didn't do that, everyone who is now complaining about other features not included would be whining about how they should've of supported those who upgraded (very few people that I know of). So come on guys, give Sony a chance. I am sure next year will be big for firmware updates for both Sony and MS.
nice cuz im getting a slim soon and i was wondering if i had to restart. and with the cross game thing me and my friend always sent a empty message (the name of the message saying what we want it to) and he was playing codmw2 and i was playing assassin's creed 2.
Besides cross game chat they should let us play ALL psp games on the PS3.
the transfer feature is nice, but ultimately unneeded. a cheap external drive and the backup data feature do this just as nicely.
Need cross application chat Sony...NEED CROSS APPLICATION CHAT... nice update, but not the one we are waiting for.
well sony trying to creep up on a come up
i'm waiting for the update to play my 360 games on ps3 while my 360 is being worked on again!!
Nice update. Sure, you can do the data transfer with an external drive and the back-up feature, this update would make that much easier. Maybe a lot of people won't need this feature but, to those that do, it's a Buddah-send.
Curious, after cross-game chat is available, what's the next thing people are going to gripe about not having? Personally, I spend enough time talking to my friends in multi-player and (gasp) the telephone. I don't need to hear Kevin screaming, "BOOM, HEADSHOT!" While I'm watching "Last year's model" (that still cracks me up) yell at Nate.
Oh, and to answer your actual question, Tim.... Tetris is the only mini I've gotten, so far. You can't go wrong with a classic. Well worth the price.
Almost forgot, does anyone know how the mini's are going to be presented on the PS3? Are they going to just stretch out to image to fit your TV? I guess most high-def screens roughly match the psp screen's ratio. My fear is, that they're going to force me to play a mini in a frame that looks like a PSPGo. Sounds a bit silly. Please, tell me, that's not the plan.

That's probably one of the most useful updates they've given. It doesn't do much for trading in up front, but you could buy, transfer, take back and trade in. Still, it's much less convoluted than having to use a USB media device or hook up an external HDD to transfer all of that crap. In the long run, it means I'm not expected to come out of pocket for something I'd use maybe once in that application - especially since Sony just proved they can get it done for free.
I guess the true usefulness of it though is seen if the new PS3 that someone buys comes with the 3.15 update out of the box.

I had hoped they'd go ahead and open all PSP DL games to the PS3 and not just the minis.
As far as cross chat goes - that's a sort of waste and not something that Sony can exclusively do. If you look at online game, the chat feature isn't something Sony themselves allow or disallow, it's how the game is developed. I can't voice chat with people playing LBP, but can playing Uncharted... it's a game feature more than a hardware feature. You'd also have to consider that if SOny did that, it means the chat client run overtop of the game itself and when you're doing online games using a chat client OVERTOP of it (not nested in it), you might get some laggy cray cause it does eat bandwidth to have all of hat going on at a time across a range of people.
Cool transfer option but it doesn't allow the copying/transfering of copy-protected game saves which is a bummer, this is apparently due to publisher’s requirements - but as some publishers/devs protected saves are copyable! So very inconsistent and inconvenient, oh wells!...
I wish that data transfer was out a couple months ago when I got my slim. A little late with this one, Sony. And just what I always wanted, to turn on my $3000 flat screen and my $400 ps3 to play shitty minis!!! AWESOME!!!! I can play tetris from 1984 on my $4000 entertainment system!! You guys are the best!... Actually I think I'll leave the (ahem) cell phone games on my cell and use the ps3 for games that I CAN'T play while taking a dump on the bus.
Cross game chat is the one thing that will please all Sony fans. I would also like to play PSP games on my PS3 (because I don't have a PSP).
epic. and i really wish people would stop whinning about cross game chat already.
*epic music plays*
