Tony Hawk Upset With Ride’s Critical Reception

With Metacritic as a guide, Tony Hawk: Ride’s PS3/ 360 score is floating just under 50, with the Wii iteration sitting at 61. This apparently displeases Tony Hawk, and the professional skateboarding legend has spoken out on the matter.

“Most snarky critics had their minds set before ever seeing/playing the game,” says Tony Hawk via his personal Twitter. “I'm proud of what we created; it's innovative, responsive & fun”

We may not all be professional skateboarders here at GI (except Nick, who reviewed Ride, he competed in the X-Games twice), but we know a bad skateboarding simulator when we see one. From my time with the game, "responsive & fun" as a description is a bit of a stretch.

What do you think? Does Mr. Hawk actually have something to be proud of, or is this just his investor’s remorse coming out sideways?

  • This game might as well have been release on the ps2 with is crappy last gen graphics and horribly executed controls. What happened to THPS2? I'd go back and play the pizza hut demo all day before I pick this steaming turd up.

  • It was a failure.  He should be upset.  I don't feel bad for him or anything.  If good skaters say this thing is ridiculous then it probably is.

  • I honestly haven't played the game so my opinion means next to nothing. However I know a BAD game when I see one, and this is crap. This is Activision's way of trying to get as much money out of the consumer as possible.

I am not saying that I want a remake but the Tony Hawk series died after number 2. Number 3 and 4 will still excellent but it all seems like a cash-in after number 2. I hope that I never see another Tony Hawk game ever.

I hope that both Tony and Activision feel the burn of this blatant cash-in and make better choices moving forward.

  • i didn't simply because there hasn't been a decent Tony Hawk game in years.

although to be honest, if it had stellar reviews i still wouldn't have bought this.

  • I haven't played it, so I can't say for sure.  However, the game bears Mr. Hawk's name; there is no way he'd say anything bad about it regardless of how it was received.

  • Staff

    It is innovative.

  • hehe i love that simpsons episode,um but anyway tony hawk was good when it was on ps2 but this is ps3. xbox and playstation fans should never ever have to play a bad graphic game. or even worse a stupid non-responsive skateboard game.

  • I think the problem with this peripheral is that it crosses the line that separates the game experience (easy for all or most) from the real world experience (easy for few).  Anything that requires whole-body coordination is going to run that risk in my opinion.  Abstracting the real experience enough that non-experts can get in on the action is what makes the other Wii sports games fun.  I think this will continue to be unpopular simply because it's too far outside the skill set the recreational gamer possesses.

  • Tony Hawk needs to get over himself. Seriously. I think quite the opposite is true about his thing about "snarky critics have their minds made up before playing a game". I was almost sure that Arkham Asylum would be just like every other batman game created, but guess what, it blew me away.

Plus, metacritic is taken in over like what, 50 reviews? I highly doubt ALL critics are that biased towards Tony Hawk (although, his games have been boring for like...a decade). If a game sucks, don't expects critics to say it's great just because you're famous. You're not alone Tony, I'm sure Beyonce's game on the wii will get crud scores as well.

  • I haven't played it either but to me there was nothing really innovative when I read up about it. I played Tony Hawk 2 and that game was awesome, I have played Skate 1 and 2 and think those games are pretty good. But from what I have heard I wont be playing Ride or paying the extra cash for that skateboard controller

  • he's just a sad panda that he plastered his name on such a piece of trash.  not that it really matters, he sold out ages ago.

  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is one of my favourite games of all time. Tony Hawk ride was bad. I played a little of it in a gamestop and it was bad.

It simple doesn't work as advertised.

  • He should be angry but the bottom line is that he made yet another crappy game. The Tony Hawk franchise needs to go back to basics. Don't make things hard with crazy button combos and nail the everything crap. But don't come up with a unresponsive peripheral and get pissed about people not liking it. Go back to he pro skater or underground series when they were about fun.

  • LOL

  • He should be angrier than the critics. The game sucks and I feel it could have been really fun. I would be pissed if they made a game centered around me (haha like that will happen) and they messed it up.

  • You know, he may have the stellar balance and control that comes from his profession to be able to use the board that comes with the game. For everyone else, maybe they need something better. He's clearly clueless.

  • All I can say without having played the game is that I work with a guy who works at a hospital and they've had at least three different people come in with injuries from this game.

  • The reason for it not being so great is the "controller". I would just go out and ride my own skateboard rather than use a fake one. The main thing that makes skate so awesome and Tony hawk so... not... is, in my opinion, the controls.

  • the funny thing is, majority of gamers could care less what a critic says about a game, atleast i do. its the gamer who makes the final decision and the say on a game, and i knew where this game was going when i heard you cant play this game without the board (this was going to be junk). and look at it, junk. why would anyone want to pay over a hundred bux for a game with a board? activision and tony hawk are better off making this into one of those games you hook up directly to your tv. they got the controller for it.

  • He's gotta be joking, right? ...Right?
