Change Coming For Mirror's Edge 2

by Joe Juba on Dec 04, 2009 at 08:11 AM

Gamers who loved the free-running gameplay and stylish vision of the future presented in Mirror's Edge may yet have the opportunity to play a sequel according to EA CEO John Riccitiello.

In an interview with Kotaku, Riccitiello expressed his fondness for the franchise and reflected on its place in EA's portfolio, admitting "I think it's a game that deserves to come back."

Whatever form a follow-up takes, it won't follow the exact same formula as the original. While Mirror's Edge had its fans, it didn't gather the following EA had hoped, and it didn't perform up to expectations from a sales perspective.

"It was like we couldn't quite decide if we were building Portal or a runner, and I don't think the consumer was ready to switch it up quite that way," Riccitiello said. "You could say it was a sharp and great innovation. I believe that it was. You have to figure out what to do from here if you want it to be a five million seller vs. a one-million unit seller. I've had several very lively debates with the dev team. And they are working on it. But there's a couple of different directions you could go."

We're happy to see that EA hasn't given up on Mirror's Edge, but how much can the game change and still retain its identity? Do you think it is worth keeping the franchise going even if it undergoes significant changes? Let us know in the comments below.
