EA CEO: Medal of Honor and Battlefield To Knock CoD From Top Spot

Yesterday EA announced the return of the Medal of Honor franchise that will be set in modern-day Afghanistan. With the help of Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community, EA hopes to create the most “authentic modern war experience.” Sound like a jab at the guys at Activision and Infinity Ward over the Modern Warfare series to you? It is. EA CEO John Riccitiello said in a recent interview that he wants Medal of Honor to lead the pack again.

"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back," he commented. "And we're going to get there with innovation and quality."

Riccitiello also has high expectations for the upcoming shooter from EA and development studios EALA and EA DICE. The latter of which is responsible for none other than Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

"The first [Bad Company] did very well in its first outing," he said. "The next one is a heck of a lot better and it looks like a worthy competitor to Modern Warfare. We think we've got an advantage over Modern Warfare 2 with our multiplayer. The guys at DICE do that really, really well."

Riccitiello also touched on the competition: "I think the Infinity Ward guys are great. It's not about them being bad for us having to be great too. I'm a fan of a lot of our competitors' products. But if you've played Modern Warfare, and you've played the first one — and you've played the last Call of Duty — it's sort of starting to feel like they're making the same game again. And I personally think being able to control your vehicle as opposed to being able to ride on one [is good]. And I think there's something a little bit cool about taking a building out and getting the six guys in it. Personally, I get sort of a silly amount of pleasure out of it."

Think EA’s franchises will have what it takes to compete with Activision and Infinity Ward’s hit series?

  • In my mind, it will crush Modern Warfare 2. But yet, the other side of me is saying, it won't. Only reason for that is because there is way too many Call of Duty fans that just won't bother to try the others out. By the looks of it this Medal of Honor game is going to be amazing, they're working with Special Ops, I guarantee it will probably be more realistic than MW2. But it won't sell more only for the sole fact there is way too many CoD fans that won't give other War shooters a chance.
  • Not going to happen, COD is simply to big a beast right now. This looks like a great game regardless.

  • Indeed. It may be well received and it might sell well (Im getting it), but I sincerely doubt that it'll sell better than Modern Warfare, not even close. And what is D.I.C.E doing with the multiplayer in Medal of Honor? I dont see how they can come up with something that isnt percieved as a MW2 of BF2 clone, even if it's based on the other game.

  • i hope that BC2 and MoH can do great since i enjoy playing online a lot. the more people playing the more i'm inclined to play.

  • I'll try anything, twice if I like it. Thats what she said.

  • HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT EA GAMES ALWAYS GO ON SALE FOR 19.99 SO SOON?

I PREFER CALL OF DUTY, GOOD LUCK EA.

  • I hope it does become number one. We need more innovation and originality in gaming. Not lackluster sequels that just cram more of the same for your $60.

  • I bet that BBC2 will give Activision a run for its money, and nothing would make me happier than seeing Kotick's smug little face turn sour.  However, I'm not seeing MoH surpassing either of the games, since it's been pretty tarnished over the years.  Not only that, but with how similar it is to the modern-day CoD games, there's going to most likely be a much smaller audience, due to the rabid CoD fanboys attacking it.

  • COD will always be best.  Ea is generic

  • How can you say EA is generic?  and as Vote 4 Pedro said, I would love to see Kotick stop smiling from the mass amounts of money they're pulling in.  And as I've said before, he has the most punchable face in America.

  • I wasnt a big fan of the first bad company, sloppy story telling and not enough to hold my interest.  MW is a juggernaut for its game play and story, but if EA makes a better game I will be more than happy to say I'm wrong and climb on board :)  .

  • Personally, I am buying Battlefield 2 and not Modernwarfare 2, but I feel the general public will not. I didn't buy MW2 because the franchise is starting to feel like Tony Hawk in that it's the same thing with minimal features added.

  • The Medal of Honor game looks like it has some serious potential.

  • I think its much easier to dethrone COD then many think. Frankly, I while I love MW2, I thought it was lacking the innovation that I wanted. I HAVE felt as if I've played the same game three times... I couldn't believe that you still can have maps with vehicles... I like buildings as much as any other guy, but I get tired of not being able to run someone over at full speed with a fastmover the split second before he captures the friendly flag. In that way, I get the urge to dust off my PS2 and play Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, which I still have many fond memories. I thought for sure with new systems that this would be taken to a uber degree, but alas, I play Battlefield and COD specifically, and the maps are considerably smaller and doesn't have many options other then getting a killstreak once and a while.... heck, if I wanted a heli in Battlefield 2, I got it, and so did four other people.. Now its one person, and is in the littlest space imaginable.... no room to fly, just a hope someone doesn't have a RPG.

  • Can't have vehicles*

  • I remember when Call of Duty was basically a rip off of Medal of Honor.  Seems like it's coming full circle.

  • @ Anthony: That he does.  If you ever find him, can you let me know too?  I REALLY want to punch him.  REALLY badly :-P

  • Anyone can compete with IW, and while I loathe EA, I dislike the manipulative processes of IW even more. MW2 was wasteful, and if MoH comes with a full length, well written story to back the traditionally 'pretty good' game, then I might have to make myself somewhat of a hypocrite and get it... for PC.

  • Call of Duty couldn't have been a rip off of Medal of Honor, considering a lot of the people at IW were the ones the made MoH back in the day.

  • this is never gonna happen call of duty is better and battlefield bad company 2 is modern warfare 2 with a different name and vehicles its gonna
