Sonic Classic Collection Spinning Onto DS

by Tim Turi on Dec 01, 2009 at 10:15 AM

If Mario owned an apartment and Sonic was his mooch friend, the Nintendo DS would be the couch he'd crash on. That's what is happening with the upcoming Sonic Classic Collection. This marvel of cartridge engineering will harness the power of Sonic's four original Genesis adventures, making Robotnik-bustin' easier for Hedgehogs on the go.

“The original Sonic the Hedgehog games were the start of a pop culture phenomenon that extended beyond just the video game world,” said Sean Ratcliffe, Sega of America's marketing VP.  “The Sonic Classic Collection will introduce a whole new generation of gamers to this beloved Hedgehog and take them back to his humble beginnings.”

"Humble beginnings," eh? If by "humble" they mean "amazing." And by "beginnings," they mean "beginning of the end." Let's not kid, Sonic, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are all incredible games, but save for Nintendo's handhelds Sonic has had a rough run. Maybe fusing the ability to save mid-game in Sonic and Sonic 2 will somehow unlock the power to freeze time and undo the last 15 years of Sega's mascot.

Who else is excited to have all four awesome games on one DS cartridge? If it were the spring of 2010 and you had the game right now, which one one would you start with? I'd definitely start up Sonic 3 & Knuckles, assuming they make use of the "lock-on technology."
