Sonic Classic Collection Spinning Onto DS

If Mario owned an apartment and Sonic was his mooch friend, the Nintendo DS would be the couch he'd crash on. That's what is happening with the upcoming Sonic Classic Collection. This marvel of cartridge engineering will harness the power of Sonic's four original Genesis adventures, making Robotnik-bustin' easier for Hedgehogs on the go.

“The original Sonic the Hedgehog games were the start of a pop culture phenomenon that extended beyond just the video game world,” said Sean Ratcliffe, Sega of America's marketing VP.  “The Sonic Classic Collection will introduce a whole new generation of gamers to this beloved Hedgehog and take them back to his humble beginnings.”

"Humble beginnings," eh? If by "humble" they mean "amazing." And by "beginnings," they mean "beginning of the end." Let's not kid, Sonic, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are all incredible games, but save for Nintendo's handhelds Sonic has had a rough run. Maybe fusing the ability to save mid-game in Sonic and Sonic 2 will somehow unlock the power to freeze time and undo the last 15 years of Sega's mascot.

Who else is excited to have all four awesome games on one DS cartridge? If it were the spring of 2010 and you had the game right now, which one one would you start with? I'd definitely start up Sonic 3 & Knuckles, assuming they make use of the "lock-on technology."

  • Tim has already preordered five copies of this.

  • i'll rather buy the Collection on the X360.

  • I would definitely start up with Sonic 2. Knuckles was one of my favorite characters, but this is where I started with the series and my heart has a hard time straying a way from this frustrating fun filled platformer.

Anyone remember the code for Super Sonic (I called him Golden Sonic for probably about 15 years)

  • I wouldn't get it.I enjoyed the classic Sonic games but the games released afterwards took my attention away.

  • Sweet... sonic on a hand held again in his prime! Just like the Sega Game Gear!

  • This story is just oozing with enthusiasm. I'm surprised you didn't add a couple more paragraphs about the "lock-on technology."

  • Sonic 3 & Knuckles= FTW.

Remember when Knuckles was first introduced and you were like owtf, then he runs away? o_O Yeah that was a pwn moment.

  • I would love this game I WANT IT!

  • [Who else is excited to have all four awesome games on one DS cartridge?]Don't everyone raise your hand at once...hahaha.

  • Great idea. Sega needs to make more sonic games the way they used to be. Namely, 2 dimensional and awsome.

  • I'd definitely check it out seeing how Sonic 2 was probably one of the very first games I ever played

  • Sweet! Now this would be great to have on all those long holiday drives and flights.

  • Ahhhh, good times I remember playing sonic on my sega, sounds cool thay they are making it for the new dsi.

  • I'm not buying this.  I already own the original Sonic games in like four different shape and forms at this point.  T.T

  • Sonic CD >>>>>>Sonic 3>>> Sonic 2

  • ooo, cant wait. this will prob be the other game i play on the DS besides new super mario bros

  • Well, it's about dang time!

  • Looks like it will be a fun trip back in time!

  • Can't really say I'm excited about this as the sonic games have been released,re-released,re-re-released and so on for I dunno how many times now,and just the original 4 is kinda...lack luster now.I can pick up Sonic Mega Collection+ with all these games, plus the game gear ones, plus ristar for like $10 on PS2.Its just not worth it any more...

  • nah... ill pass
