Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway Says Price Drop Has Spurred Wii Sales Increases

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Nintendo's executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway revealed that a recent price drop has reignited sales of the Wii. After Wii sales had plummeted 43 percent from April to September of 2009, the new $199 MSRP seems to be luring in new customers as planned. Dunaway claimed that weekly sales have been up 85 percent since the price drop, allowing the Wii to regain its title of the best selling console in the market for October after falling behind the PlayStation 3 in September. The system's profile has also been boosted by recent sequels to some of its mega-franchises, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit Plus, and Wii Sports Resort.

"I think going into the holidays, the Wii is in a very good position," Dunaway said. "It has an unbeatable combination of games, experience and unbeatable value, and that continues to put it to the top of people's wish list."

Still, even despite the rising sales statistics, it appears unlikely that the Wii will match its sales totals set in 2008, when it moved 10 million consoles.

  • apparently $50 extra dollars was FAR too much for the Wii. /sarcasm

  • Eh the main reason I think it did good before was because it was cheaper than the 360 or ps3.

    Lol, which games?

  • I love how all game-console corp. execs think or claim their product is 'unbeatable'.

I'd love for just one Nintendo PR rep to just come out and say: "You know, our console isn't the best, but it's fun, and for the money it's a *** steal."

  • good job (claps) Now get more hardcore games out (Super Smash Bros. 4)

  • of course they sold better.  now everyone that bought them cheap can sell them for hundreds more to the schmuks that don't keep up with current events on ebay.

  • I want one.

  • lol which games, Mario Party.....

  • lol

  • Uh maybe I'm getting bad information but I just read an article were Nintendo said that sales of the Wii during the Thanksgiving Sales period, Nov. 22 - 28, were down from last year.

  • I hope this is due to games like New Super Mario Bros. rather than Wii Fit Plus. I can't stand Wii Fit. Get to work on that Super Smash 4!

  • Did you have to show her face? My ensuing rage at the sight of it made me kill my hamster.

  • Mod

    Get ready for....Captain Obvious!

  • Why do they keep expecting sales numbers to grow higher and higher when a majority of their market already own Wiis.

  • Good job for the Wii. 10 million consoles in 2008; I wonder what the end of 2009 will bring?

  • I would think a cheaper console would sell more games, its like when the PS2 dropped to $99 and that became the new sweet spot. $200 for a Wii is a good deal especially when most of the games (besides The Beatles and a few others) are $50 not to mention the plethora of great budget releases the Wii sees. Oh and both the hardcore and casual recently got new hits, Mario and Wii Fit Plus, and not to mention Wii owners have a good January to look forward to, with No More Heroes 2 and Tatsunoko Versus Capcom and there is plenty of reason the system is set for success. I think 09 was a good year for the Wii, always seemed like there was at least one thing cool each month. 2010 is when the power franchises return so that will be interesting nonetheless.

  • The key part to read here is its up 85% since the price drop, Not since last season.  I am guessing that compared to last holiday season sales are going to be way down.  Something else not shown  in this data is how many people picked up the console because of the price drop.  Compared to how many where planing on buying it as a holiday gift regardless of the price drop.

It seems to me now going into what the 3rd holiday season of this generation of consoles that actual sales number of the systems are not all that relevant.  I would figure that by now most people that are going to purchase in this generation have, the money is going to come from software.  This is where Nintendo should be more concerned in my opinion.

  • Price Drops usually generate sales when it comes to systems.

  • You still spend the extra $50 on the second control.

  • Soccer moms rejoice!
