The lights are on
With our 200th issue, we decided to look back at the history of gaming. Since we’re gluttons for punishment (and meetings), we compiled a list of the Top 200 games of all time. As you can imagine, it’s generated its share of discussions and controversy. Several of our editors have made blog posts that are at least peripherally related to the list, and we thought it would be fun to compile these into one central hub.If you’re wondering just how we came up with such a massive list, Reiner explains it all. (It’s a bit more involved than coming up with random titles and throwing darts, in case you’re curious.) He's also put up his Top 10 games of all time list for all to see.Andy Mac has a pair of posts, first outlining his thoughts on the list and then following up with his Top 11 games. (Apparently his picks are so powerful that a mere Top 10 wasn’t adequate.)Tim, Ben, and Annette took this as an opportunity to write about some of their favorite games that didn’t make the cut for various reasons. Oddly enough, both Tim and Annette have a common denominator in Banjo-Kazooie. (Ben is doing his own thing, as usual.) I took a similar approach, naming four games that I would have put in there, along with the games that they could have replaced. Dan's compiled a list of his favorite games, with the explicit qualifier that these are not "the best." Ever the underachiever, Jeff Marchiafava lists his three favorite games that didn’t make the cut. Also, some guy named Sean has posted a list. He claims he works here. Who knew?Miller’s interest in downloadable games bled over from his Impulse column. He’s listed his Top 10 downloadable console games. (Believe it or not, Space Giraffe didn’t make the list. Maybe next time.)If you thought our list didn’t contain enough classic PC titles, you’re not alone. Adam has compiled a list of what he calls the most “egregious snubs” for your reading pleasure. Tell us how you really feel, Adam.Kato saw the process of compiling Game Informer's Top 200 video games as a walk through the past. In his blog he shares personal memories he had about some of the world's greatest video games. Nick took a similar angle, sharing five of the game’s that he says he’s played the most. Not one to be outdone, Bertz compiles a list of 10 games he's spent the most time with. (Don't let "sucks" throw you off; these are good games.)
Just because a game is great, that doesn't mean it's without flaws. Joe's blog shows off how players can deviously exploit the mechanics built into one of the best RPGs of all time. Finally, Bryan ruins it all with his baseless claims that Super Mario World is superior to Super Mario Bros. 3. (Be sure to leave comments on his outrageous lies.)

Why the heck isn't my issue here yet. If it doesn't come soon I am going to have to steal one from you people.
i have to give kutos not only did ff3 the greatest rpg of all time make it in your top 10 but i was lucky enuff to get the mag with ff3 cover art i'm just glad you guys didn't pander to the masses of ff7 and 10 fan ff3 still rocks today gj game informer MUNCHY8404
got the mag today and I like the list. wish i had got the FFVI cover instead of the GTA one tho =_(
I was a little disapointed to not see Final Fantasy VIII on your list, I thought it had the most awesome cutscenes and it had a much better story than VII. I also couldn't believe Halo 3 wasn't on there, I mean how does a game that improved upon its predecessors in every concievable way not make the list.
Ohh and Mario 3 was garbage, Super Mario World owned all other Marios
iwish they put all the mortal kombat games on the 200 list
Overall, the mag list is great. BUT- I guess I may be the only one to sound off here, and I'm sure I'll be bashed for bashing Zelda! #1??? WTF!!??? Hell, I thought Duck Hunt was much better than Zelda. lol. Of course, you can tell I'm not an rpg fan, but Zelda???? NUMBER ONE??? Numero Uno??? Guess I've lived under an 8 bit rock for the past 22 years, but SMB was definitely better than ......ZELDA!!!!!
Ok, now that I got that off my chest. Thanx for the Metroid cover- AND not the blankety-blank-blank Zelda cover! MAYBE- number 2.
Number 1!!?? Aaaaaaaarrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
Okay, Zelda. Great game. But not number one. Yes, it was important, but that doesn't make it the best of all time. Hell, you said it yourselves, ALTTP and OOT "improved" on the original. Frankly, I don't see how you could pick anything other than Ocarina of Time for number 1.
Oh, and EVERYONE knows that Mario 3 and World are better than the first- but of course, the original is higher because it was "more important". And Sonic 2 should have been higher. Great list otherwise.
I am so glad you had Beyond Good and Evil on your list, even if it was #200. That game is amazing!!
Hallaluja (i spell that right?)! got my copy today, and the top 200 does not disappoint. Congrats Gameinformer on a great run. Here's to even greater success down the road.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the top 200 games of all-time list. Also, I completely agree with your number one game, Legend of Zelda (which is my favourite Nintendo franchise). I can't imagine how difficult it was to come up with 200 quality games to make the cut.
Many gamers are wondering why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 didn't make the cut -- it did -- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (#14). This is the game responsible for aspiring what Modern Warfare 2 has become today.
Hope I get my magazine soon.
how is Devil May Cry number 157, metal gear solid 4 number 104, bishock should be top 10, Ocarina of time should've number 1.
i was really dissapointed with this list.
You get props for BG&E being on the list (though it is way better than dead last). But the absence of both Psychonauts and World of Goo is almost unforgivable.
And the only space combat game is XWing? Tie Fighter is widely considered the best of that series. And my personal preference was always for the Wing Commander games with Privateer being one of the best games of all time. I can understand why it wasn't included, it being in a dead genre and all.
All in all, a decent list with just a few glaring omissions and errors. ;o)
System Shock 2 just wasn't high enough...yes Bioshock was excellent, and one of my favorite games...but 105 for System Shock 2???!!! GASP
Super Mario Bros. 3 is far greater indeed.
Alot of those i disagree with, but oh well
this list is terrible
WTF Half Life 2 on spot 5?Seriously that game sux its the most overrated thing I have ever seen everyone keeps liking this boring game Gameinformer is no exception
