Microsoft Patents Hint System

by Matthew Kato on Nov 24, 2009 at 05:09 AM

Microsoft has filed a patent for an in-game hint system that gamers will be able to access when they need help. While this may sound similar to Nintendo's Super Guide system for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Microsoft's patent doesn't go so far as Nintendo's auto-play.

The patent, found by Siliconera, details a system where gamers would be able to access a GameFAQs-esque community of help guides created by both gamers and the developers themselves. Microsoft's guide system would not only feature text-based tutorials, but it would also be capable of hosting video, screens, audio, and more. One of the tools available to people making guides would be a digital pencil, of sorts, that would allow a writer to tag a specific screen, clip, or in-game item with their commentary.

No news as to whether this guide system would be available only for Xbox Live Gold members, or whether it would be free for everyone to use.

Microsoft's system seems less aggressive, but no less helpful than Nintendo's auto-play help system (which takes control of your character if you want it to). Which would you prefer?
